Newbie here! Hoping to learn a bunch of new info about how to follow the market and when/what works best for long term saving. We had everything in the G fund, built it up to a small savings and yesterday split it up. Not sure if we picked the right funds for long term investing. We'll see.

I initially wanted to do C-20 and S-20, and nothing in F.

Welcome tspfl! Good job keeping track of your tsp, most people in my office treat their tsp like the plague. A basic strategy for long-term is to go into as much risk early on and as the years go by slow move into more 'safe' contributions. The L-2040 fund will actually do this for you, but if you're like me you want to watch over it and move it around by yourself.

G-Fund is basically cash. It has a very slow but steady growth rate.
F-Fund is Bonds. This fund won't skyrocket up or down. So, it is considered less risky than the ones below
C-Fund, S-Fund, I-Fund are all an aggregate of stock, and are the riskier funds that the tsp has to offer. Remember, more risk can equate to more reward. And since you have a long time to wait it out, I would focus on these.

Welcome to the Board tspf, good luck on your move.

Welcome tspfl. Your allocation may be good during a bear market, but depending on several things about your situation, in particular age and when you plan to retire, having only 20% in the stock fund, and 0% in U.S. stocks, seems much too defensive as a long term investment allocation plan.

So whether you have the "right funds" to me depends on whether you plan to be a "buy and hold" investor, or an investor who makes adjustments as the economic environment changes.

Your investment strategy / approach will be something that will develop as you become more knowledgeable, and that will help you make decisions.

Good luck and thanks for joining us!

I am 29, husband is 31.

We did the switch for future deposits. We did not move any money we currently have in the G fund. We plan to keep that there, for safety.
We plan to retire in a long time. At least 20yrs.

Consider us a buy and hold type.

Thanks for all the info, and I am glad to have found the site:)
