Gap fill or bull flag?

1/09/12

Just a quick update today since the action, while down, is neither all that positive nor very negative considering the huge start to the year. The Dow lost 55-points but the losses in the S&P 500 and the small caps were minor.

The S&P 500 looks a little toppy, especially when compared to the pattern from spring / summer 2012. But the trend is up and I don't think any downside action will be major.

And while the Nasdaq has a large open gap from the big January 2 rally that looks like it is begging to get filled, there is also a very nice looking bull flag forming.

The question of course is whether the gap needs to get filled or if the bull flag will be strong enough to avert a fill. Filling the gap would basically wipe out the positive bull flag formation.

The indicators are still leaning to the overbought side, but the kind of selling we're seeing (so far) is not very alarming. We seem to just be experiencing the typical seasonal trading day 4 through 7 dip and this may just be that profit taking that takes the early January rally off of the overbought levels.

The federal government is scheduled to run out of money sometime in mid-February and of course this kind of disruption and next round of negotiations in Washington is not going to bring a lot of optimism to the stock market, and if anything can kill a rally, it will be this. I'm taking it day by day right now.

Thanks for reading! We'll see you back here tomorrow.
