Furlough Thread

For FERS you get what you pay for. For standard FERS oldtimers you pay 0.8%. To figure out your annual salary according to FERS take your YTD FERS deduction from your End-of-Year statement and divide by 0.008. It is usually close to your annual salary but doesn't include things like bonuses or overtime pay. It may also not include some other specialty pay you may recieve, but it does include Locality pay.

Question to those that have actually been furloughed...

Were your Federal, State, Social Security, Medicare, and FERS taxes reduced as expected - or did they do nothing and just slam you? If those taxes are not automatically adjusted I will have to do what I can to take them to where they should be. Can't do much about some of them on my own, but I can change the allocations from Fed and State.

Just wondering. It takes two pay periods to make these kind of adjustement...

Adjusted acrossed the board!

Remember fellow DOD types...

This past paycheck only contains half the excitement... More to come;)

Reminder to fellow DOD travelers...
This past paycheck contains only one furlough day...
From this point onward we will get two furlough days of deduction...

Also, note that the hit taken to your paycheck is the result of horrible management. We are talking about a 4% pay cut, but because our Agency Goobers elected to play the 'If you cut this you cut to the bone' game we have a 20% cut in pay. Also note from Frixxxx's linked article that the civilian workforce in the DOD has grown by 14% since 2000. This Gravy Train has fallen off the tracks.

We were told that your high three are based on your Base salary (which is still what it was before the furlough). So the furlough should not effect high three. I hope it's true since I can retire in 2 years and I need this year to count.

Link from OPM

It should not affect the calculation, UNLESS YOU WERE IN A NON_PAY STATUS DURING THAT TIME!

Remember there are two accounts on you LES. Furlough and LWOP. (I think Boghie pointed this out in another thread.) Make sure to be at work when you should be!

Ahhh, DISA. Yep. .....How about a good start like 100% furlough of the two cited? "But while the authors of the email—Deputy Chief Financial Executive Sanna Sims and procurement director Kathleen Miller—decried the rare problem of too much funding, they also urged colleagues to spend every cent. "

Politics...

Apparently, each furlough day is worth about $180 Million.

A lot of money...
$180,000,000

But, out of a spending plan of...
$633,287,000,000

Or, put another way...
0.03%

So, tell me again that this was a serious effort at cutting a bloated budget. Garbage. They wanted us and the general public to squeal. Every dollar is sacred. Nope...

It will be very interesting to watch the 'Monthly Treasury Statement' for July...

My guess is that:
  • Borrowing costs jump
  • Social Security Revenue fall
  • and, DOD spending will fall somewhat

Got a friend going to Afghanistan soon. Why??? Not in it to win it anymore... And, I really don't want the Marines left in Afghanistan reliving 'The Ten Thousand' - having to fight their way out through either Iran, Pakistan, or Turkmenistan. It might come as a surprise to our esteemed Commander in Chief, but it could be very difficult to fly tens of thousands of troops and Marines out of a landlocked kill zone. Just saying...

I wonder if the erst while furlough savings would have been offset by the abuse in just one federal, one size fits all, easy criteria to meet, program.....Fox News Investigates 'The Great Food Stamp Binge' | Fox News Insider ...apparently this channel is going to air the results of an investigation of food stamp abuse. The verbalized headline story is a surfer in commiefornea who reports once a year to the unemployment office, when the weather does not allow surfing.

FURLOUGH FRIDAY.....

A guy stopped at a local gas station, and after filling his tank,he paid
the bill and bought a soft drink. He stood by his car to drink his soda
and watched a couple of men working along the roadside.

One man would dig a hole two or three feet deep and then move on.
The other man came along behind him and filled in the hole. While one was
digging a new hole, the other was 25 feet behind filling in the hole. The
men worked right past the guy with the soft drink and went on down the road.

"I can't stand this," said the man after tossing the can into a trash container
and heading down the road toward the men.

"Hold it, hold it," he said to the men, "Can you tell me what's going on
here with all this digging and refilling?"

"Well, we work for the government and we're just doing our job," one of the
men said.

"But one of you is digging a hole and the other fills it up. You're not
accomplishing anything. Aren't you wasting the taxpayers' money?"

"No, no, you don't understand, mister," one of the men said, leaning on his
shovel and wiping his brow, "You see, normally there's three of us: Me,
Elmer and Leroy. I dig the hole, Elmer sticks in the tree, and Leroy here
puts the dirt back.

But you see with the government sequestering AND FURLOUGHING, they're
not buying any more trees, AND Elmer's job's been cut -

so it's just me an' Leroy now."****

you forgot the punchline jim:

so the man says 'well, since elmer went and got himself a job as an arborist at a competitive wage in the private sector i guess we don't need you and leroy hanging around no more. and quit leaning on the taxpayer's shovel like that, it cost somebody good money and still has a useful life left, unlike you, you unproductive teatsucker.'
