You know this is coming sooner than later- so don't act like you're so surprised. We are going to pay for the consequences of the past 20 years for the rest of our lives.

House Republican leaders have submitted a so-called deficit reduction proposal slashing federal retirement benefits, as well as funding for many agencies and worthwhile programs.

In a June 4 White Paper, Republican Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) recommend basing retirement calculations on "high five" instead of the current "high three" average years of salary. Annuities under the Civil Service Retirement System would be reduced by $6,500 over five years.

Another item to be shocked by: 'Eliminate Retirement Payments For Federal Workers Who Retire Before Age 62'

Gone no where..

Did my retirement papers today and I asked about this and HR said the PROPOSAL (and that's all it was) was trashed last fall.

Thanks guys and Grandma...It's scaring the hell out me right now..knowing I'll be going solo without the feeling of this job every morning to go to like I have been for the past 36+ years...those that have retired know what I mean..

I do however, have a contractor job all lined up and it will pay the same yearly salary that I was making as a FTE with the FAA, I start 10 days after I retire, June 4th..So life is really better..cept, no more Lean Sick Sigma, KSN, ISO, Configuration Management, T&A, LDR and all the other BS of the day to day job I have now....

YuP..as far as honey do's? Plenty!!!..Paint outside of house, new granite counter tops in kitchen, new Master bath Shower basin, Tile front porch, New Roof (gotta hope for a nice hail storm to take that out [wood roof])..

And of course a new toy....A new Mercedes E350 to replace the old 2003 Jaguar
...

But Buster,

If you put off your retirement for another year and your buddies Cantor and Boehner get a veto-proof super majority...then you can reap the benefits of GOP leadership firsthand.

From that proposed bill (or what I like to call the GOP rallying cry of "The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves") :

"Eliminate Retirement Payments For Federal Workers Who Retire Before Age 62"
The Federal government provides civilian employees with a benefit not normally offered to private sector employees, Federal employees who retire at age 55 or older with at least 30 years of service or at age 60 with at least 20 years of service receive until they reach 62 a benefit equal to the estimated Social Security benefit for which the worker will become eligible at age 62. This policy not only encourages Federal employees to retire early, but it comes at a significant cost to taxpayers. Preliminary estimates indicate that the early retirement benefit costs taxpayers $267 million a year."
This is inevitable if we are going to pay for the progressive agenda.

uhhm...that agenda I quoted...is REPUBLICAN.

Francis:)
No Rahm, Sherlock!:D Someone is going to have to pay for the progressive agenda! Where else do you think they are going to get the money? They'll have to enslave those able to work to pay for those unable or unwilling to work and know how to work the system in order to leach off the working class!

Look,

We can go back and forth on this all day, but lets look at facts.

The overwhelmingly biggest reason we have a National Debt problem is from 8 years of Reagan...and 12 years of BushCo. 20 years of massive deficit spending with accrued negative interest. Its always been the job of Dems to clean up the GOP deficit mess and now that Bush stuck us with the collapse of 2008...Obama has to spend some money first to clean up the mess.

But at least he and Dems will target the deficit. It will likely be practical.

- Some taxes will be raised.
- Some cuts or at least caps on spending will go in effect.
- Significant cuts to the biggest waste of our tax dollars (military overspending) will take care of most of the problem. GOP can't do that because military contract spending is their Sugar Daddy's fee for being in existence.
- Growth will help kick in some deficit reduction...like in the 90's.

And all will be well.
Unless the GOP can lie and scare enough people to put them in control again. Then we're really in trouble.

Saracasm and vitriol are poor substitutes for thoughtful exchange of ideas.

I thought President Clinton balanced the budget. So it would really be only the last 8 years that this debt has accumulated.

FWM - I would gladly accept the STRAIGHT TAX to get the government out of debt, but can you ABSOLUTLEY Promise that the tax would go away after the deficit was gone?:suspicious:

Of course you are wrong once again. The surplus credited to Clinton came from a Republican controlled Congress. It is reasonable to expect that surplus to go away, and even go into debt after the attack on 09/11. Reasonable people will disagree with necessity of the Iraq invasion, but even without Iraq we'd be in this mess, IMHO. The tax cuts did take income away from the government, but it was spending that has really gone out of control since the Democrats took over in 2007. The TARP and subsequent spending bills REALLY did a number on our economy, yet your answer to this is to spend MORE money on an unnecessary and unconstitutional healthcare bill/power grab.

How are we going to establish growth in the economy when we make very few things anymore and government is trying to take what money they can from us?

If it's a straight tax and everyone is paying their fair share what difference does it make if it goes away. What's wrong with a little extra in the bank for hard times.

The Republican controlled Congress at the time balanced the budget.

Progressives will never agree to eliminate a tax they initiated. They believe that all money flows from government and belongs to the government. The people have no right to property, money, or freedom to succeed/fail in a free market environment. They believe that the people should serve the government, not the government serving the people. They call it progress, but in reality it is regressing to despotism. I agree with Nnuut; progressivism is a an incurable disease.

How about we not tax in money for welfare programs. I never saw that in any readable section of the Constitution and only tax for what we spend.

Really, no extra, it's the money of the people for the people.
