DreamboatAnnie's Account Talk

Right On DBA!!! She and Linda Ronstadt were good friends, and besides being greats in their own right, Nicolette sang beautifully in support of Neil Young in his Harvest Moon album. She and Linda Ronstadt also sang on a few other Young albums is my recollection. I guess I've have to pull the vinyl out of the closet and recheck that.

Hi Nnutt...Yes, I can tell you like guitar.!Do you play guitar??? I bought one recently, but only know two cords so far...
I like it!!

Thanks I really like Nancy's work. She was under rated because of her fantastic sister, but she got a great deal of recognition in the long run. Maybe you can tell, I love guitar.

Did you see the show on Paladia where they did the entire Dreamboat Annie album live? With the original band I believe. Awsome! oh crap, i said awesome.

Hi 99percent! Noooooooo......Sad to hear I missed it. Would love to see it. I'll need to check guide and see if it comes on again. Thanks for mentioning it....wow... I saw them two years ago and had a meet and greet with them and seats on 2nd row in outdoor anphitheatre. Awesome concert!! I was on a cloud. I want to see them again!!

I have 3 guitars and tried to teach myself how to play on the internet. I was 50 years old and tried really hard for 4 years and basically gave up. You really need to play with someone or a band and a good teacher to do it. People think they can learn cords and that's it. HA! it's really hard. BUT if you have it and some folks do it is easier but it was hard fo me. I still have the American Strat, the Ibanez acoustic electric and a Spanish flamingo guitars and think every day that I should try again. I never failed in anything I tried until I tied to learn to play the guitar. And buy the way I don't give up easily as you can tell.note1.gif

well...I can tell you...I've tried three times in the past and each time I gave up within a week. It was too hard...always had problem wrapping fingers around the neck so I could not play a single cord and fingers hurt.

But I just bought a Keith Urban acoustic off of QVC because it was designed with less thick neck and strings advertised as "coated" so not so hard on fingers. My nephew , who plays, said he liked the strings.

So far I have been able to pick it up better, but have not had much time to play. Trying to get into habit of playing at least a few minutes a day. First day, I played for about an hour and I had dents on my finger pads for a day and sore for a few...so I am taking it easy. The one I have is a pretty blue jean blue color. So I match most of the time! Yes..I know...totally irrelevant! But its really nice, love the color, and sounds great!

Practice is the key! Wish my fingers would cooperate! :D

You have to develop callouses on your fingertips. Doesn't hurt so much after that.

OK, then! Its not just me! Nnuut, I have 3 guitars (Fe
nder Super Strat (Mexico), a Fender acoustic (Indonesia?), and a Les Paul Jr. (ch); made it most of the way through Guitar for Idiots, was able to play some tunes, then life got really busy and I got away from it. Like you, DBA, I need to keep one at arms reach and work at it again. I started to work on some Nora Jones, and just the first few notes sounded fantastic... need to get back into it, play along with some of my albums. :)

I'm a big blues fan and I have picked up the harmonica a few years ago and trying to self teach myself to play. I spoke to some that do play and they say to listen to those who play and try and imitate them. So I turn up some blues really loud and try to play along. I don't sound anything like them but I enjoy blow n and try n to play. I also go listen to live music when I can. If you enjoy stick with it and don't worry about what others think about how you play, your play n for you not them. Strom on DBA...

DBA I read you forum regularly but don't post much because I am learning from you and the rest; however, when it comes to guitars and the basses I can tell you that your fingers are going to hurt until you develop calluses and that take frequent playing. The "coated" strings you speak of is more to make the strings last longer than ease finger pain. Also acoustic guitars are going to be harder on your fingers because the strings are just harder to push but IMO they are the best to learn on because you don't need all the amps, pedals etc. If I can provide some advise, it would be to buy extra light strings and work your way up as need to higher gauge. Also playing a song you like makes learning more enjoyable. Start easy with songs that only contain a few chords that you already know how to sing then you can sing and learn to play at the same time.

Also there are a tons of websites that provide Guitar Chord such as "Ultimate Guitar" where you can grab the songs that show you where in the songs to make your chord changes. (google Guitar tabs or Guitar Chords) You do need to be careful as some of the songs are not very good but you will learn to weed them out. Most sites have a "star" rating for the songs that helps. As for paying with other there is nothing better to improve your skills but in case that's not an option, pull the song up on youtube and play with the original band. I do it all the time. Also look in you are for jams were beginners and experienced people just get together and play and no one is humiliated because they are starting out. As a matter of face most of the time the experienced folks help the newer players learn. Kinda like getting free lessons.

I always keep a guitar next to the couch so if I hear something on tv I like I can just grab the git and try to find it on the fret board. You'll find a lot of riffs and chords in songs are the same. Just in different keys.

I was going to stay of this one but simply can't. I've been playing for 45 years. I have more guitars (mostly vintage) than most pro's. If you've ever seen Jackson Browne's guitar collection...think about 1/2 of that. I know...it's a sickness. I can get behind everything everyone here is saying. I took lessons for 2 years back in the sixties from phenomenal jazz guitarist in Hyde Park Mass who owned a small music store. When I was in the military in early 70's I really started playing with bands, solo gigs, and finally started writing my own songs. I have about 20 that I've kept as keepers over the years and have recorded several in a studio. I will tell you that it is practice practice practice, then start again. For me, I had to feel the fretboard by continually playing scales (major and minor). It' takes a while and it's quite frustrating but it is like golf...muscle memory. And once you've got CAGED system in your head, and you're strumming is rhythmic, you're off to the races. Learning leads, etc follows. I hope you guys stick with it. I used to teach so if you have any questions feel free to send me private message. I cheat these days by downloading tutorials from You Tube on just about any song I like and want to play better. I can't believe all the great free stuff. Best of Luck to all of you and keep practicing.

FS, Don't forget this beauty Nicolette Larson, passed on too young (RIP), great voice, almost reminds me of Linda Rondstat.

All,

OMG ! At the risk of hijacking DBA's thread...all y'all are taking me down "Memory Lane" ! :D Nicolette Larson , Linda Rondstat...MAN...her version of "Blue Bayou" STILL gives me goose bumps !

Wife and I were HUGE Simon and Garfunkle fans (well, mostly the Wife...they were just a little before my time, but I have older Brothers and Sister ! :D ...and I loved their harmonies !) We saw them in a reunion concert, and also saw Paul Simon's "Rhythm of the Saints" tour live...OMG !!! He is awesome !!!

That led me to think : He was (is ?) married to a woman who did a song that just captivated me, back in the day...couldn't remember her name ! Well, the "Internet of Everything" supplied an answer, AND the song !!!

Just LOVE this one !!!

Wife also turned me on to John Denver...saw him live, shortly before he died...RIP...what a pure, clean voice, and another GREAT show !!! OTOH, I turned HER on to Huey Lewis and the News...even now, those Old Geezers do a rockin' show !!! :D

I realize we are off TSP market talk but just to help DBA learn a few basics here's my two cents on guitar play. I've been playing since a young teenager, learned from my father who played. Like "FogSailing" said, once you learn you get hooked, it is like an addiction. I also own many acoustic 6 and 12 string, and electric axes, Yamahas, Taylor, Martin, Fender, Les Paul Gibson, amplifiers etc. etc. DBA, you mentioned you know two chords, master does and then learn two more. Just knowing 4 chords will allow you to play some nice tunes. I posted a music video on the entertainment page, a song called "On a Beach" by Richard Ashcroft, that is the "studio version", look at the video of Richard Ashcroft playing the same raw acoustic (12 string) version of "On a Beach" playing just 4 chords (G-Cadd9-D-A) just play the C chord for now and forget about the "Cadd9". What I am saying, listen to the studio version and then watch the acoustic version below, 4 chords and the guy is a millionaire. Watch the fingering and his right hand strumming. It takes time but once you learn how to play one song, master it you will move to learn more songs and eventually you'll become the next Nancy Wilson. Watch, the video, it's easy for us who play but if you put the time you can play this song, you already know 2 chords, learn 2 more and practice practice. You'll be elated once you can play your first guitar tune. You can play "Gloria", "La Bamba" using 3 simple chords. Good luck, give it a try

I have an ukulele I plan on learning to play after I retire next year. Does anyone know how to play? It doesn't seem to difficult, unless your sitting under the mango tree drinking Mai Tai's.

I should add that on my route there is one house with a huge mango tree where twice a week some local folks get together and play , and have a few cocktails. All are welcome to sit in and enjoy. Some of the ukulele players are experienced and some are beginners ; it's a nice little gathering of friends.

Hi KK. Attached is a chord chart for a ukelele. This will allow you to start practicing NOW!!!:D:D:D

I think you'll find the ukelele an easy instrument to play, easier than guitar or mandolin in my opinion. I've always loved that it was one of George Harrison's favorite instruments. Have fun and enjoy the beverages under the mango tree.

WOW!! Had no idea there were so many people on this site that play guitar, or want to learn! That is soooo awesome! I'm stoked!!! Wow...if we ever got together as a TSPTalk group we'd have a huge band! Everyone would need to bring their instruments!!

Thank you to all of you for posting the great songs! Also thank you for the great tips...yep gonna work on building the callouses and practicing more...will see about learning more cords too.

Stoplight, I love Linda Rondstadt too. Long ago I sang Blue Bayou at karaoke but its been over 15 years since I sang it. Actually going out to karaoke tomorrow night with friends. I'd been thinking to sing Magic Man or Dog and Butterfly....but might give all three a go as we are heading out early and might be able to squeeze three or four songs in before it gets too crowded. A lot of times I shy away from the older songs, as I try to do newer songs depending on the crowd but to heck with it...I'm singing the oldies tomorrow.

Whipsaw and TSPR, I did not realize Nancy Wilson had written songs for movies! She is so very talented! What a life she has had....probably many of the same ups and downs we've all had but through it all, she plays and loves music just like us!! I must admit it is one of the lasting true joys I have enjoyed...life would just not be the same without music and singing!

I definitely will try the YouTube site for Ultimate guitar lessons Quabit. Also, Slayer 72... thanks for the link to guitar lesson to play "Crazy On You" ...I just watched the whole thing. Now I am very motivated.!! I think I want to learn that first even if I play as slow as a turtle! Lol..:D..Im just going to learn each little section a bit at a time...probably wont know what notes I'm playing but thats okay.
Oh...and yes you can crash my thread at anytime to throw a party or share anything about guitar playing, music, singing, etc. :fest30: I just love it!!!

Thanks again! And of course....best wishes to all you music lovers and guitar players on your investments!!!!!!!!!!

Rock on...Truely from my Heart!! :

P.S. KK..Ukelele?? Thats Great! FS..thanks for posting cords!

 SIR, YES SIR !!! I will start practicing NOW, Sir ! LoL! You crack me up. Thanks for the cords...it does look easy and I have practiced in the past, but only half-hearted, my head just wasn't into it at the time.

I love the mandolin by the way. I think I fell in love with the sound listening to a song by Cat Stevens called Rubylove. I don't think I'll try to learn that instrument. The piano would be my second choice.

And just an FYI to y'all...you're spelling and pronouncing ukulele wrong. I learned that fast when I moved to Hawaii. It's spelled UKULELE and pronounced (oo koo lay lay) not ukelele or (u ka lay lay.) you will get corrected politely.

Thanks DBA, for letting us hijack your thread for a bit. Sing your heart out tomorrow!!!
