:D don't 'cha know those pilots are having the time of the lives up there, doing all those squirrleyQ's !!
Is the choreographer counting off the beats & timing thru their
headphones ??
And are these pilots `just normal' Navy men when off duty??
-just thinking...... !!!

well that will just about make you cry. what a display ... of focus and discipline and control ... who knew it could result in such imagination and inspiration and freedom.

i remember watching them perform at seafair over lake washington a long time ago rafted up with a big rowdy bunch, couldn't hardly focus the gaze so much bouncing entertainment to see, but when they flew over it was amazing to feel the roar, no doubt about where to focus attention then, came away with a feeling of hope and pride, if they could do that then i could attempt anything.

i imagine at some point the pilots felt that feeling in the in the pit of their stomach, probably early in training in less sophisticated craft, but there is little room for that given the precision on display, i imagine they 'record' it in a part of their heads and play it back later when the responsibility is not so great.

would love to hear the official radio chatter for the length of that performance, probably quite exact and sober, when you know the dance so well there is little need to call the time, now that is situational awareness to the nth degree, do you know where your brother is?

One of the pilots was excused from duty last year because he was dating his lead mechanic. He was an officer and she was enlisted - they eventually got married.

I saw a documentary of the Thunderbirds practicing their maneuvers while sitting around a conference table. Their squad leader would count out the timing and all the squad would make the maneuvers at the proper time using imaginary equipment. Then when it came time to do the actual air show the squad leader did the same counts through the headphones.

It was an interesting program.
