Clester's retirement story

Do you suppose each agency & OPM operate differently?"? I have called all my friends who have retired in the last 12 months (NASA) and most were getting their full pay within 3 months. One fellow waited longer due to multiple transfers (Fed service), but the others stated this:

Received sale back of leave 2 weeks after final pay check, partial (80%) annunity in within first month of seperation, and TSP in about 6 weeks.

What causes the differences???? I would be stiffeled somewhat if my retirement payment process turns out to be like Clester's. :suspicious:

I don't know the answer to that question, I worked for DOD USAF and they got my retirement papers out to OPM in a week, still took 7 Months! That's IF I get my finalized Annuity check at the end of this month? NASA is quick!:D

Jeez...What a nightmare..I go back to work full time Aug 2nd as a contractor..So I got that to live on..But I am CSRS like Norm..So the FERS thingy maybe the screw-up...

So far, I have received nothing..My last day was July 2nd, the last day of the pay-period..I got that last check July 12th..I was also awarded the day before at my retirement ceremony a $500.00 award for my extra service to a cause..and found out yesterday I won't see that until July 27th or Aug 10th...I have been told by several and my HRO that the Annual Leave payback will take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks from my last day...Also HRO said my first Annuity check will be 80% of normal the 2nd of Aug, because I left on the 2nd of July (that date is considered the last of June still) and not after the 3rd..something about a grace period for three days into the next month..So if I would have left anytime in July after the 3rd..It won't be until Sept 2nd until I see my first annuity check...We shall see.

Consequently..since then, USPS and a few other agencies did a big early out, buy-out and a shipload of people took it..backlogging OPM for months, or so I've been told..:(

Yikes, I really have big fun to look forward to. I left CS and returned as a CSRS Offset employee. Don't even want to start explaining that. Any other CSRS Offset employees out there who have retired in the last 2-3 years?
What was your experience like?

UPDATE on ANNUAL LEAVE Lump sum payback:

I called OPM and they said that the Annual leave payback LUMP-SUM is issued two pay-periods after your LAST paycheck received..In other words using myself as an example..My last check was July 13th...two pay-periods from then, would put my due date for the Annual leave Check at August 10th.

SLOOOOW___>> I retired on Friday and got my check the next Thursday!! DOD!
DOT may do it different...but somehwere in my memory banks I remember around the time I was retiring I was told a few things had changed in procedures since the first of the year...maybe that was one of them.

Just got notice today that my supplement and backpay is on the way, I wasn't expecting it yet so it is a pleasant surprise. So it will be about 3 months after retirement.

Still getting partial fers though. :(

UPDATE..I did get my Annual Leave payback Aug 10th and that Award money on this date as expected I would per OPM explaination....They did however, take out Retirement contributions (7%, funny I thought, since I'm now retired:rolleyes:), they also taxed me for State and Federal at the rate based on my entire year-to-date income and also took out medicare....So they took it all now instead and that's okay, because it won't hit me as hard next April...I also got my first (80%) annuity the 2nd of August....So I'm told it will take a couple more months before my annuity is regular at 100%.

My brother-in-law retired in CSRS and said he got his retirement quickly and pretty close to the right amount.

Guess they haven't got FERS figured out good yet! :(

But, at least the supplement is on the way finally.

I wish you all the luck and easy living in the world..I know from working with you guys when I was AF, that you too deserve the easy life now..:)

For what it's worth, I talked to a friend last week who retired from the USPS eleven months ago and he got his first full annunity check this month. Personally, I don't care how long it takes, I just want out!!! December 31 is quickly approaching and I'm READY!!!

That's how I felt. Retirement was the best decision I have made. I don't regret it.
Don't get me wrong, I am thankful for my career but the FAA is broke.

NASA is Broken too!!!!!!! December 31 can't get here fast enough for me!!!

A Head Start

In spite of technological advances, the federal government for now relies primarily on paper files to compute, manage and distribute retiree benefits. But employees can streamline the process by taking a few steps now to ensure their service and beneficiary information is accurate

Retirees shouldn't hold their breath for automated annuity payments
By Emily Long elong@govexec.com August 24, 2010

Delays in the rollout of the Office of Personnel Management's $136 million electronic retirement claims processing system could require continued patience from federal retirees waiting for annuity checks.
Federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra on Monday announced that about 30 high-risk information technology projects, collectively worth $30 billion, are underperforming, adding those initiatives will be slowed until officials can get them back on track, and possibly cut. In a call with reporters, Kundra said the OPM retirement system project has essentially halted. "It is slowed down as far as spending," he said. "The intent is to make sure that these projects are turned around, that they are implemented faster."
The retirement systems modernization effort was designed to update and automate annuity claims processing. The current paper-based process is plagued by incomplete retirement applications, a lack of real-time information, inaccurate data and payment delays. The updated system will be a central place for storing electronic retirement data compiled from agencies and shared service centers. Plans also call for a management tool to access imaged retirement documents; an online retirement application for use by applicants, payroll offices and OPM; and a more streamlined tool for collecting data used to determine retirement annuity.
