Birchtree's Account Talk

Re: Birchtree's account talk

Birch, may I use your home for another 'feeling old' story? Thanks, you're so hospitable! :)
One day while my children were in their early teens, I started singing along with the song on the radio. My daughter asked, "Why do you know that song, Mom?" I responded, "Because it's Yesterday and that's one of the most popular songs that the Beatles ever wrote!" And she replied, "Who are the Beatles?"
Made me feel very old !

Heck, that ain't old! I go back much further than that.. :D

Re: Birchtree's account talk

We had an unprecedented event starting in September as a result of the irrational panic from the hedge fund industry. I still prefer to blame it on the Bossanova.

I still remember how to do the Bossanova, but I'd probably strain something if I tried it.:laugh:

Yes, we watched Roy Rogers and Gene Autry movies in elementary school on a 16mm projector while we were sitting on the school lunchroom floor. And every movie still had a happy ending. :toung:

Happy trails to you all, and especially to Birch for hosting this walk down memory lane!

I'm not admitting to be that old but I remember Gene, Hopalong, Cisco,Bob Steele, Buster Crabb, Lash, and lots more on the silver screen. There was one that killed his wife and was sent to prison for it (Spade Cooley?). None of the aforementioned would do such a dastardly thing.

Re: Birchtree's account talk

nnuut,

I found out the hard way that I had become part of history when my daughter was in grade school and she had to write a report about the Vietnam war and had to ask me what I did during that time. Talk about feeling old. :notrust: Oh, by the way in 1970 my draft number was 26. :(

My number came up in September of 1965, I don't remember my number. I joined the US Air Force three days before my report day!!! View attachment 5303

I was drafted in August, 1967 but not by the lottery number method. The "draft number" deal didn't begin until December, 1969. My brother (who is 5 years younger), drew a number that was never called, so he lucked out and never had to go.:p

"A lottery drawing - the first since 1942 - was held on December 1, 1969, at Selective Service National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. This event determined the order of call for induction during calendar year 1970, that is, for registrants born between January 1, 1944 and December 31, 1950. Reinstitution of the lottery was a change from the oldest first method, which had been the determining method for deciding order of call."

Re: Birchtree's account talk

I would like to suggest that we give Birch his thread back and move the remember old times and the draft over to my account. Thanks Birch for letting us use your place.

Assumed it was OK since XL-entLady respectfully asked Birch's permission. Here are some possible responses from Birch, should he protest the hyjacking:

- I would have pulled out my glock and sent that booger to Allah,

- Talk about drowning in bull tinky.

- besides I like the sweet smell of superlative bull manure

- the bears are about to get crushed. Snort!

- The dust cloud is building as the bulls begin to move faster.

- Nah, no reason to cut and run.

- If you run into a foot of snow eat some for me.

- I'd rather eat toe jam than a green peanut

Re: Birchtree's account talk

You all were very nice. Here's a memory. I took the bus to Portland, Maine when I was a senior in high school to take a physical for the Marines. During that road trip I met two sisters on the bus. One of them invited me to her apartment in the city. One thing eventually lead to another. To make a long story short when I realized how late it was I mentioned I had to go. On the way out the door she says "can't you stay long enough to put out the fire?" I guess I wasn't destined to be a fireman.

Birch, I processed through Portland as well, although much, much later, shipping to P.I. a week after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990. Do you mind me asking what high school you attended? I'm from Sanford/Springvale.

Re: Birchtree's account talk

I attended Groveton High School in Groveton, New Hampshire. There were only 42 students in my class. One of my class mates was killed in Vietnam and another seriously wounded. I was fortunate enough to survive 18 months with only shrapnel holes. Still got a dimple on my butt from one piece and I haven't had hair on my legs below the knees for 40 years. I enjoy my Florida nights mostly because of my nights in country and some of those experiences. This past summer I was working on my lawn when a UH-1 flew over at about 300 ft and I was right back in an instant. I didn't realize I had that much adrenalin left in my old body.

Re: Birchtree's account talk

When you mix water and boots plus friction things get chapped - springle in a little jungel and you get smooth legs. When I was younger and in a speedo people would actually ask about my smooth legs and the answer was always the same - jungel boots.

Thank you for your service to our country.

Stepping in for 12% today - I wouldn't be a bit surprised if we see a strong rebound this afternoon. Hamas will continue to eat cement and if Iran wants some there is plenty for them also. It's about time a little vengence was returned to Hamas. I wonder how much Iranian equipment was destroyed in the Hamas tunnels?

The Guru has spoken!!;) Just wait - next year - I mean next month wait till that commie takes office and turns the United States into California. It is going to be ugly. We are all going to be in a big circle singing "Kumbaya" with ol' "stretch face" Pelosi and "Dirty Harry" Reid wondering what the hell happened to the good ol' U.S. of A. and how the hell they are taking 20% more of our money every time we get paid salaries, investments, whatever and why Iran will want to shove a nuke up our you know what.

Can you say Herbert Hoover and Neville Chamberlain rolled into one??

(On that happy note I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas (can I still say that???) and has a happy New Year.)

Re: Birchtree's account talk

I was reading the Florida Times Union Sunday when I came across an article about the gun show circuit. The organizer was saying that there had been a very large increase in attendance and individual gun sales. There were also a marked increase by individuals applying for concealed weapons permits. There was a photograph of one of the tables and all the potential customers lined up - both female and male. There however were no tans. I thought that was interesting. There was also another story that mentioned the death rate among young black males had increased 39% over last year. Something is going on under the radar and good folks are getting prepared with heat - I've always had mine so I'm not concerned - but what is the worry? I wish I knew.

Those missing in that picture you saw were at the "other" gun show circuit, in the alley behind the check for cash store, where background check requirements and legal I.D.s are waived. :D I waited recently for over 3 hours for the T.B.I. to check me out before I could purchase another hunting rifle to add to my arsenal. The fact that I have retained a legal carry permit for years didn't seem to help.

Re: Birchtree's account talk

I agree Birchtree.
My wife and I are just waiting for any sign of decent news and we plan on Mortgaging another home (probably just property) for investment. Home prices and loan rates are tough to pass up and if I'm willing to buy and hold stock, why not property.

Enjoy your Holiday

Well, then you must have alot of idle cash, since banks now require about 30% down on a home that is not owner occupied; more on raw land.

Remember, there's a bunch of speculators out there that bought what they thought was "the bottom", and have taken huge losses; they will bail at the first sign of improvement. Be careful.
