I am an Active Duty Air Force Aircraft Maintainer and have been placing 4-10% income in my TSP with very low management since around 2007. I hope to start investing with a purpose as I am 38 and have 3-10 yrs left before retiring from military service. I hope I can learn to better manage my fund allocation and techniques for better returns in the future. Looking over statements I did manage to blindly earn an 11.92% return last year, previous to that it looks to be around 6% avg without doing the math yet.

I am also sitting on my savings account that I would like to invest separate from TSP but am too worried as I have not studied enough. Thanks for all the advice and look to learn as much as possible.

Welcome aboard. This is a great place to learn. Ask lots of questions. People will suggest but the ultimate decision is yours. Don't let anyone tell you what to do. 6% average isn't bad. I've had good years and bad years but you have to remember that you are in for the long hall not short term. The important thing is you are willing to invest into your future retirement. Congratulations on your near retirement. I am prior military and recently retired from Federal law enforcement. TSP Talk as a financial information resource is simply outstanding! I did not become actively involved in growing my TSP account until about 5 years before my retirement. The approximate 6% average return I was receiving was not getting me the nest egg I desired. Based on the advice received from "Intrepid Timer", I consistently receive the double digit returns I desired while only exposing my TSP to market ups and downs for approximately 1 week a month. Look around and choose the investment resource that is best for you. Good luck In your retirement!!

For your personal savings, you might check out Vanguard. My dad started me with Vanguard and I have been with them ever since. There is lots of good information on this site. Best wishes on getting to retirement.

Welcome to the forum. Once you figure out your investment strategy, most discount brokerage (such as VanGuard, Fidelity, TD Ameritrade) typically have low fee ETFs that mirror the main TSP Funds or you can diversify with other options not available within TSP. You may want to consider opening Roth IRA for tax free growth. Whatever you decide to do...Good Luck & Thank you for your service.
