What to do about Super Committee ideas on FERS?

I'm in FERS, about 2 yrs away from retirement. I keep reading article and article about the Super Committee's ideas on balancing the budget, many of the ideas about messing up our FERS benefits. Now - I understand there is a budget problem. And if you want to reform FERS, fine, but do so for new employees. I read some ideas that impact all current FERS participants, even those with very little time left till retirement.

When we accepted employment with the federal gov't, we were told of defined benefits and we made out decision on that. We have shaped our financial planning on those benefits. This is not fair.

Maybe next they will tell people who worked for the federal gov't at any time in their lives, that they have been pushed to the 50% tax bracket. Or raise our Social Security start to 80?

So what should we do - people on TSP Talk. I suggest we look up our Congress person and start emailing them with our thoughts. Get the world out to all federal workers to express their thoughts. We really need to work together.

Just sign me - frustrated FERS.

I feel your pain...........I'm eligible to go this summer and switch from civil to FERS 11 yrs ago (my office at the time did not believe in giving any kind of credible advice). Congress is incapable of fixing this country's problems and if they dont get this deficit under control and government spending we will become Greece!

My losses in thrift this year have been a bitter pill to swallow and I am just building my balance back to where it was last DECEMBER!

Thank god we have some rental property to supplement our retirement. Our agency is not doing any early retirement packages or they know there would be a mass exodus.

I have been send messages especially to republicans in other states, both parties are broken..........pathetifc. The only person I have any respect for is Elizabeth Warren who actually cares about the middle class.

NARFE is about the only lobbying group you have. The K Streeters are busy collecting their $1M salaries, expensing everything, and representing entities that can offer staffers and legislators lucrative employment. (I see and hear about this close up every day.) THEY are your competition in this game.

I have emailed all of the Senators and Congressman from my state and all I get is a form letter stating that they are concerned about the national debt and will consider all options. I have even spoken to Joe Wilson, in person, at several BBQ's this summer, that we happened to be at at the same time. He listened but would not give me any indication of what his position was, other than the debt was out of control. So write all you want, but I think you are wasting your time. It's your time though, so do what you want with it.

Oh and FYI, I wrote the TSP Board about the restrictions on IFT's and received a form letter 6 months later that said they could not increase the number of IFT's. After awhile, you just give up.

Just remember folks, we work INSIDE the belly of the beast, and know first hand about the waste in government. I think it is high time we start letting folks outside the matrix know what we know and not stop until they actually get it. When Penetta stated that any further reductions to the DOD budget would threaten our defense posture I amost puked. I used to respect the man as he was our local congressman, and I work at a DOD facility in his old district. Now he has now entered the dark side, and became one of THEM.

I will be doing just that, in ernest, starting in 64 days!

I was telling people while on active service how much power they continue to transfer to 535 "prima donnas on their way to K Street" by not complaining about the growth of the federal government in every way. People would always tune me out and turn back to American Idol. :) Good luck on emails, letters, and angst in general. 2008 was the final tipping point. Even moderates not in favor of the current administration cannot bring themselves to reduce programs significantly or give up their favorites. The States, which are closer to citizens, and locals, always know best what they need, are now mere execution arms of Congressional/Lobbyist created programs and policies that breed fraud and corruption--corporate and personal--because they try to legislate criteria one size fits all. The incentive of local government employees is to find new recipients of benefits like free cell phones, not to restrict the free benefits to the truly needy that seek them. And to help everyone figure out how to qualify, even it means lying, just a tad. Remember how embarrassed Russel Crowe was to take "assistance" in the movie? I guess it's only fair, lobbyists get paid by corporations and trade groups who get their funds for lobbying by charging a tad more for a Milky Way or an AARP membership. Gotta keep those compensation packages up for the staffers and Legislators.

Waste in DOD, you bet. How much waste has to be tolerated? How much fraud in Medicare is acceptable vs the cost to stop it? How much pilferage by private sector employees is acceptable vs the cost to stop it? How much ..... Some bad stuff is always going to exist. I think I've heard that the cuts in DOD are pretty draconian, but I guess it depends on one's point of view.

The beatings will continue until moral improves.
