Weight loss/physical fitness

I have a huge gut and need to lose some weight. I also don't want to have any more health problems than I already have (arthritis).

We tried the gym membership...what a waste of money. We only went a few times.

My wife recently bought a DVD called Power 90 and tonight was the 3rd time we have done it. The beginner stuff on the DVD is pretty simple but it's really kicking my butt. It's a 90 day program and I'm sure after 90 days I'll be better off than I am now if I can keep it up.

What have you done to get into shape?

I know..."round is a shape."

Help! :embarrest:

Just stick with it, stick with it, stick with it- but don't overdo it. Rome wasn't built in a day, but that's because Birchtree wasn't there.

Gyms sell yearly memberships to people in January knowing they'll no longer be around come March.

Power 90 is great. I had good weight loss results with it because I stuck to a diet throughout the 90 days. I also had more energy and beat some college kids at basketball (granted I am decent, already).

Make sure your diet is something that you can live with, and has a good balance of protein and carbohydrates. Not one extreme or the other. I used a program on my computer that I input everything I ate during the day, and it displayed all the nutritional information I injested. Based on that, I would eat less or more depending on my caloric goal (1800-2000 cals).

Kevin, I'm trying the 'keep at it until something clicks' program. :cheesy:

Since exercise is such a challenge for me I couldn't find anything to keep the muscles toned until I tried yoga. And yoga was what clicked for me. Spouse wouldn't be caught dead on a yoga mat  but he has had double knee replacement so he needed something. Biking is what finally clicked for him.

As far as diet goes, we tried everything it seems like. And South Beach (watching glycemic levels) is the thing that seems to have worked best for us.

Good luck and keep us informed of progress, okay?

My wife and I did the P90X thing.......B....R...utal.
Our fitnes level was not where it should have been at the beginning so we suffered quite a bit......But we enjoyed it...the workouts were fun.
The most brutal workout was the P90X yoga routine.....a real sweat dripper.

P90X

Diet is very important.

Move, eat, repeat..

I quit smoking and jumped on this program two months ago. My co-workers laugh....every time it should be a smoke break, turns into a push-up or sit-up break.

My wife and I actually want to repeat the program.......I think we would see more dramatic results.....I bet there was a fair amount of coughing in your routine....

First two weeks I would start coughing for no apparent reason. Doc told me that my lungs finally got the message that I wasn't polluting them anymore and got rid of that "protective" layer of crap in there.

I just hope after 24 years of being stoopid that I stopped in time....

kevinD.....My wife and I have found out over the years that, whatever works for you at that moment to keep you motivated to do the next work out is what works.
at one time the pressure of paying monthly to a gym or a diet was enough motivation to keep us on track.....then that faded and the motivation of accountability to someone worked...then that faded and yada yada yada.......I guess the only thing that works is that one has to want to do it(whatever it is).....the truth of the matter is, is that you wont always want to do it.....So, My approach has been to try and bridge the "want to" times with as short of a "Don't want to" time as possible.

Frixxxx,

Unfortunately your biggest problem going forward will be your blood vessels. Nicotine really plays havoc on vessels. I quit when I was 19 only because I couldn't keep my cigs dry while in Vietnam - best decision I've ever made.

http://delicious.com/wwwtractor/diet Some diet links. Blueberries are good for your blood vessels. Of course, I only say that because I am a blueberry farmer. He he.

Yeah, tractor, I am a serious fan of glycemic index too. Spouse has strong history of diabetes in his family and eating low glycemic helps keep his blood sugar down where we don't have to worry about it. Our one downfall is sushi rice. :embarrest: We don't eat brown or even long grain rice, we love sushi rice and it is about as high on the glycemic index as a rice can be.

The most important thing is diet. I suggest u follow the blood type diet plan. www.dadamo.com There are foods u are eating that cause a bad metabolic response in the body causing weight gain and there are foods that cause the opposite. here is the basic food list http://www.dadamo.com/typebase4/typeindexer.htm
this is based on fifty yrs of research and is now world wide.
My asthma and allergies have disappeared as long as I avoid certain foods, some are common foods in this country and some are poisious food additives used to maximize the food manufacturers profits. I could go on, but will not.
Two other sites to look into www.mercola.com gluten is the problem for everybody.

What have you done to get into shape?
About a year ago I bought myself one of those eliptical bikes, or whatever they are called. While I like it much more than jogging, I do hate every minute of it but I force myself to do it 3 times a week.

I just saw a show on the History Channel (or the like) about the human body's time clock, and to my surprise, they said that exercising in the morning is not the best idea as your body (mainly your heart) is apparently most at risk before noon.

I used to like to get my exercise over with in the AM, but I may have to rethink my schedule.

I also take mass doses of Niacin (don't use the timed release kind) to keep my cholesterol down.

i found that if i do stair climbing in the morning at work, it takes 15 mins. it jump starts me for the rest of the day. i have 4 flights and i take the stairs 2 at the time and go across the hall at the top and down the stairs on the other side and repeat 5 more times total of 6 laps it will break a sweat and get my metabolism going like you would not beleive.i like the fact that it ONLY takes 15 minutes !!! i work out in the feild alot so sweating at work is not a problem. i also do the routine in the afternoon before I go home if I feel froggy (most days). I also make myself accountable by marking the days I do it on my calender. do whatever works for you, good luck. i do it for health reasons, weight maitnenace is secondary.
