Weekly jobless claims jump to 231,000, the highest since August

Jobless claims totaled a seasonally adjusted 231,000 for the week ending on May 4, up 22,000 from the week before.

It was the highest claims number since late August 2023.

Continuing claims, which run a week behind, increased to 1.78 million, up 17,000 from the previous week.

The weekly initial jobless claims came in higher than expected this morning: 226K new claims vs. 216K expected. That's up from last week's 221K.

In the current "the only thing that matters is interest rates" world that we live in, this is considered bullish news for stocks.

Ironically, the 10-year Yield is up modestly this morning after that report was released.

The initial weekly jobless claims came in slightly lighter than expected (fewer jobless claims) while continuing claims was slightly higher than expected (more jobless claims)

Weekly Initial Unemployment Claims Decrease to 222,000
The DOL reported:
In the week ending July 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 222,000, a decrease of 17,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 238,000 to 239,000. The 4-week moving average was 233,500, a decrease of 5,250 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 238,500 to 238,750.

US weekly jobless claims unexpectedly fall

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 4,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 218,000 for the week ended Sept. 21, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 225,000 claims for the latest week.

First-time filings for unemployment insurance totaled a seasonally adjusted 241,000 for the week ended April 26, up 18,000 from the prior period and higher than the estimate for 225,000.

Continuing claims, which run a week behind and provide a broader view of layoff trends, rose to 1.92 million, up 83,000 to the highest level since Nov. 13, 2021.
