just wondering- what do you all think of the U.S. Navy announcement today that they are naming a combat ship after former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

While I certainly think that is quite an honor, I didn't realize they named ships after living people, and I'm not real comfortable with that. I was just wondering what the ramifications might be. Apparently it is rare for a ship to be named after a living person, but the Navy has done it from time to time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._military_vessels_named_after_living_Americans

Do you think it's a good idea to name a ship after Giffords?

I wonder why you name a combat ship after someone who went through what she went through.
To me, it seems a little off.

Not that she isn't worthy of some kind of honor of the sort, just something non-violent maybe.

To quote from the first line of the wiki link

The United States Navy has a long tradition that no vessel be named for a living person, and an equally long tradition, stretching back to the Continental Navy, of breaking it from time to time.

The ramifications have apparently been...none. If this bothers you so much why didn't you complain about USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23) in 1998?

Chill out, she was (is) a Democrat. Oh-yeah, a "blue dog".

Based on the blue dog thing, I have changed my mind. It is a travesty. Along with USS Ronald Regan (CVN-76), USS George H. W. Bush (CVN-77) and USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78). WTF is the Navy thinking?

I have mixed feelings but I know in my heart that she sacrifice more than many of the people that got their names on federal buildings, post offices, airports, ships, etc. She paid a heavy price for representing her district and she will carry it forever.

I 100% support the naming of a US Navy ship in her honor...You go Gabby and hope your life now shines better than ever.

How about the USS Gabrielle Giffords with an all female crew?
