It's liar or stupid and deaf. Take your pick. Either was sufficient to not get my vote. "best he could do" may be appropriate. That being said, I know he was not stupid, he was actually very intelligent although the press loved to find little gaffs to pick at and make him appear to be a bumpkin. That leaves only one possibility.

So, it's dawning on me that I'm letting my blood pressure rise over someone who is long gone. Time for me to step back and take a deep breath and move on.
