Burrocrat hit the nail on the head. Congress passes a budget and it's seperate from the debt ceiling. Which makes no sense. This is the equivalent of obligating expenses over the limit of your credit card, and then tell the credit card company, "Well, those funds are commited." Ok, bud, that means you don't get the money.:toung: The two have to go together. If your budget causes the Government to go over the debt ceiling, you should have to raise the debt ceiling too. Anything else means there's no buget based on the actual situation - and no plan on what to do when the credit card reaches max. "I'm shocked, shocked! That there is borrowing going on here!"

Treasury is doing the equivalent of raiding retirement funds (well actually they are raiding it, aren't they) and paying off debt with "rainy day" funds. After a while it catches up, and meanwhile it's expensive.

It is a budget, and the funds are obligated. Whether it's a a budget that makes any sense is a whole different issue (and I'm not going to get into that one because it belongs in Beltway).

Voting for a budget then refusing to actually allocate the necessary funds. Sadly this is precisely the thought process that is passing as logical in some circles; really it's grandstanding, plain and simple. It's like ordering an omelet at your local corner diner then refusing to pay because an omelet costs more than 2 eggs and toast.

It is a budget, and the funds are obligated. Whether it's a a budget that makes any sense is a whole different issue (and I'm not going to get into that one because it belongs in Beltway).

I posted the graphic because there is a lot of unjustified Obama bashing in this thread when it comes to the problem of the debt and deficit. I usually see one liberal posting on various threads and about 10 Conservatives jumping all over him for even expressing his thought, but calling Obama a Socialist (which is laughable) is AOK.

I wouldn't mind paying more taxes. I suspect being a rich man living in a poor society is not my ideal world. Compared to the days of Eisenhower, and even Reagan, our current marginal tax rates are ridiculously low for what is required to maintain our great society.

Most of the time, the problem is not with who caused the debt/deficit, but more about what we are doing (or not doing) get fix the problem. This is obviously a problem long in the making, but it has got to be time to put some real fixes in place to get out of this mess. And no, more taxes isn't the only solution to fix it (hint, hint; lower/slash spending).

Then please send your "extra" money to the IRS, so that those of us that do mind paying more taxes won't have to. Oh, and the money required to maintain our great society is too much. 1 in 6 people are on food stamps, 2 years of unemployment benefits, and over spending (with no checks and balances) on so many social programs do not make for a great society; just an over-spending one.

As usual, the answer lies in the middle. I'll state that I'm independant. I voted for Kerry after Bush proved himself a liar and I voted for McCain because I thought Obama did not have enough experiance.

Ryan scares me. He is actually testing the waters on this idea of the U.S. being a little late on our debt payment. He's checking out what the press/public reaction would be. It is just plain stupid. Think about what you credit card company does to your interest rate if you are late. It will be that easy to counter that stupid arguement with the public. Joe six-pack can understand his credit card interest rate going up.

Right now, I agree with the fiscal conservatism mantra of the Republicans; however, ultimately raising the cost of our debt by making it harder to borrow is the most dumb thing I have ever heard of. Counter that with the Democrats making the Republicans look like hypocrits by being against removing the oil subsidies and the Republicans are starting to loose the gains that they made in the last election. The Republicans ran on Obama-care during the last election. That won't carry forever.
