TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

The bears were in the drivers seat early this week but the bulls came in to buy the dip on Tuesday showing a little life. Stocks opened higher on Wednesday as the bears fell asleep at the wheel. The rally continued and peaked early Thursday followed by minimal movement through to Thursday's close. The momentum turned around Friday as stocks opened lower and closed just above where we started the week.

The I-fund produced modest gains for the week. Bonds reduced some damage and ended the week virtually flat.

Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending June 12th:

The SPY (S&P 500 / C-fund) descended early in the week and found support at the bottom of it's ascending trading channel. It rallied on Wednesday leaving a small open gap below but was back above the 50-day EMA. The SPY tried to push through further Thursday but descending resistance kept it to just modest gains on the day. It opened lower Friday and closed back below the 50-day EMA. The C-fund had a slight gain of 0.12% for the week.

The Wilshire 4500 (S-fund) had a similar start with an early descent followed by a rally after bouncing off rising support. Short-term resistance got in the way of the rally and the Wilshire pulled back slightly Friday. The S-fund had a slight gain of 0.16% for the week.

The EFA (EAFE Index / I fund) looked to be targeting the 200-day EMA early this week but its momentum was reversed Wednesday and it closed above it's 50-day EMA leaving an open gap below. The EFA spent another day above the 50-day EMA with open gaps ready to be filled above and below. On Friday EFA was back below the 50-day EMA and partially filled the gap below. Despite the weak ending, the I-fund was able to gain 1.39% for the week.

The AGG (Bonds / F-fund) continued the free fall early this week but turned around Thursday to pursue an above open gap which was successfully filled on Friday. Bonds may be oversold but the rebound does not mean the downside is over. The F-fund finished the week virtually flat with a slight gain of 0.04%.
