The gains of the first quarter are slipping through the hands of stockholders. The C-fund and S-fund both went through the previous week without a single day of gains. Both accumulated more than 3% of losses for the week.
The F-fund had two days of gains this past week, but the three other days of losses contributed to a weekly loss of -0.61%.
With nearly no opportunities for gains, not a single TSP Talk AutoTracker member outperformed the G-fund’s 0.08% return for the week. Naturally, G-fund holders have been floating to the top of the TSP Talk AutoTracker standings. Not too long ago only one or two members were performing better than the C-fund for 2024 in the non-premium standings. Now there are fifteen members above the C-fund in the standings. That number is even larger in the Premium AutoTracker Standings.
Others have bought into the weakness too early or feel it is too late to sell. Gains have come easily over the last six months, and many may be waiting for those returns to resume and do not want to miss out on the rebound.
Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending April 19:
The S&P 500 has fallen in the last six days and closed below its opening price in each of the six. This is not pretty but we may be seeing a bit of oversold action. Even so, this would be a hard chart to buy into. The plus for this action is the open gap from March has been filled. How much longer can the market throw a tantrum over its premature rate cut expectations?
Maybe the DWCPF can tell us. The small cap index/ S-fund has fallen into negative territory for the year. The S-fund was up nearly 7% at the end of March. That’s a $7,000 loss in three weeks for a TSP holding $100,000 of S-fund at the start. It will now take a 7.5% gain to reclaim those losses.
