Tesla surges after Elon Musk says new affordable EV models coming

Tesla shares surged 15% on Wednesday morning after CEO Elon Musk said the electric-vehicle company plans to begin production of new affordable EV models by early 2025.

Musk’s comments came during Tesla’s earnings call on Tuesday after the company reported disappointing first-quarter numbers. Revenue fell 9% year-over-year, its steepest annual decline since 2012.

The company previously expected to start production of the new EV models in the second half of 2025.

Mr. Musk, Tesla’s chief executive and largest shareholder, sold around 7.9 million shares between Friday and Tuesday, the disclosures show, leaving him with a 15% stake in the company.

Asked on Twitter if he was done selling shares, Mr. Musk tweeted, “Yes.” (He also said in April that he wasn’t planning additional sales.)

The Tesla Bot is the “most important product” that Tesla is developing this year, Musk said Wednesday on a fourth-quarter earnings call, putting it ahead of the Cybertruck and other Tesla vehicles including the Semi and the Roadster.

“I think it has the potential to be more significant than the vehicle business over time,” Musk added.
