Trump Gives Federal Employees Christmas Eve Off

President Trump issued an executive order Tuesday evening closing federal offices and excusing employees from duty on Dec. 24.

Under the order, "the heads of executive departments and agencies may determine that certain offices and installations of their organizations, or parts thereof, must remain open and that certain employees must report for duty on December 24, 2018, for reasons of national security, defense, or other public need."

Actually, I think we may be getting the rest of eternity off after Friday this week. At least that is looking possible right now...

Happy Furlough!

I have to work with a chance of not getting paid for it because I am an 'essential' employee.
Meanwhile, everyone in the Federal building gets a free paid vacation. Or at least they did during the last shutdown.

Sometimes I wish I had stayed in the private sector. :(

If that happens I'm glad I didn't overspend on Christmas gifts this year lol. As long as they back pay us if it's an extended furlough.

Had been through three furloughs in my career and always got paid! Of course there's always a first time but not likely. Sounds like shutdown may not happen this year however.

News this morning is the shutdown is not happening. If you did work during it it with even with the shutdown you get double time, when the pay goes through.

Thanks for the information. I just worked off this morning and didn't get to check the latest news.
I am thankful for my job. But things like these shut downs make me think........Why do we have "non-essential" employees?
Shouldn't everyone that works for the government and is paid by tax payers money, be "essential?"
I am ignorant when it comes to politics. And I am sure I am just how "they" want me to be! lol

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

What are you talking about, double time?

I thought all federal employee's got double time for working holidays, No?
I'm a nurse at VA, and an "essential" employee, if we work any holiday we get double time including extra ones that are announced. I got it for Bush's day of morning too. If I work Monday I will as well.

The day we ever don't get back paid after a furlough is when I start looking for a job elsewhere. When I can't count on my employer for a reliable source of income is when I'm gone

Holidays, yes, we get double time. I thought you were saying that we get double time throughout any government shutdown.

Best rumor I have heard lately-since there will be a government shutdown tonight, we were given Monday off so agencies can change the locks and we will all be locked out.

I wouldn't take that too seriously.

Lots of media reports. Some departments/agencies are funded for fy 19 and some not.

Funded:
Defense
Labor
Health and Human Services
Education
Military Construction?
Veterans Affairs
Energy
Water
Congress (of course)

Not funded:
Department of the Treasury
Department of Agriculture
Homeland Security Department
Department of the Interior
Department of State
Department of Housing and Urban Development
Department of Transportation
Department of Commerce
Department of Justice

Those are departments, agencies don't seem to be listed anywhere but some things are listed separately that may be independent agencies or part of departments.
Science
Financial Services and General Gov
Environment
Foriegn Ops

Very confusing as usual.

OPM is an independent agency. Are they funded?

Good luck everyone, interesting times.
