Being a military member, I have have been told when I retire in 6 years that I can transfer my account to a civilian IRA. would it be smart to do that where they are a little more productive or should I just let it roll on and just push the ROTH I just started? I don't get the matching contributions that the FERS gets.

I am very curious to see opinions on this?

Hi sawbonez -

The TSP loses a little of its advantage if you don't get matching funds. An IRA will have many more investment options, but the fees will likely be higher than the TSP.

I would say transferring depends on your investment objective, knowledge and dedication. If you are a buy and holder that plans little intervention on your part, the TSP should work out just fine.

Thanks. I guess I will just have to learn what I can and make the call when the time comes.
