The War Memorials

Two of my teenage granddaughters and I went see the DC Memorials with my VA son & grade school grandson several winters ago... in January!

Murphy's_Law, I hope you and your kids were able to get there today.

The family ventured out to DC despite the 100 degree weather. A small sacrifice if you consider the occasion. My girls actually shed a few tears during the Memorial Day parade and may have actually learned something.

This week I was in Washington, and stayed next to Arlington, like i usually do when I am there.

Last Tuesday evening I watched the Guard standing and moving silently. I have seen it many times, but it always is moving to see.

Today the President visited the Tomb of the Unknowns.

I go there and just stand back and watch, and think.

Some more good photos worth viewing, of American soldiers paying tribute today here, and in the war zone in Afghanistan:

The Korean Memorial was the one I found I had a hard time leaving... the body language, facial expressions were over-whelming.... Maybe because that was in my time frame -
In the 1970's, students would come into the local library, looking for information on The Korean Conflict - but there was nothing on the shelves - maybe a couple of books, but they didn't really say anything. It was disturbing to me then and continues to be now - and I don't recall if they were able to find much to add.
I am all for the soldiers' group that has been searching through the War archives at Austin for any information on what was going on behind the scenes. Whether that group is still active or not, I don't know. ...something about `winter,' I think, in their name, I've lost track of them.
Somehow we need to be able to put an end to these `behind the curtain chain pullers.' -forever -

There was a fellow at the Vietnam Wall, passing out cards with prayers, helping folks with the directions to find the name they wanted.

I'm bringing my kids to the DC memorials on Monday. I have decided it is time to educate them about what true sacrifice is. My extreme gratitude to all who have served our country.

Ran across this on another forum tonight. My great-uncle was an airman, shot down over Germany-MIA. Never found, came home. My grandmother never admitted to herself that he died. I would have liked to have known him.

Visited the Memorials several years ago-WWII left me in awe, Nam memorial brought me to tears.

Every day, 1,000 World War II veterans die.

Our mission, Operation Resolve, is simple: send every living World War II veteran to the stunning memorial created in their name in Washington, DC, before it's too late.

To help make that happen and to tell the remarkable stories of these heroes, Stars and Stripes Honor Flight teamed up with Freethink Media to produce a feature length documentary film to be released in November 2011.

Shooting for over a year and a half, filmmaker Dan Hayes and his team have captured extremely profound scenes with the vets and their volunteers, intensely emotional interviews, and breathtaking shots of the Honor Flight trip to DC.

You'll be inspired, both happy and sad, and left reflecting on what gratitude, freedom and the trip's slogan, "Every day is a bonus," really mean.

It's typical for a vet who takes the trip to rank it among their top life experiences, just behind their wedding and the birth of their children.

For us to help provide that for them, is nothing short of remarkable.

Now, you can help.

Please send this trailer to your friends and family. The more people who watch it, the more money we raise, the more World War II veterans we can give this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We're trying to get 50,000 views of the trailer by Memorial Day to honor these heroes. Help us by clicking the link and sending to friends through Facebook: http://media.causes.com/1060527
