My wife and I are going to try something different here that we think will pan out in just a few weeks. We subscribed to the local Sunday paper for the purpose of getting the coupons and inserts and with the cost of the Sunday edition at $119 for 52 weeks, (approximately $2.30 a week) we are hoping to be able to pull at least $10 a week in coupons from it; but I think $10 a week is a very conservative number. We use our store bonus cards when we grocery shop and rarely use coupons on groceries so we're hoping this new plan will help us to save even more money. Most of the time we pay with one of our credit cards that is offering a cash back incentive that month too. (Two of our credit cards are very good for that.)

The reason we've held out on the newspaper is because we already get the WSJ and Economist for the 'national news', the local news is on TV during dinner, and I get all the sports coverage I need on XM radio. We just figured we had enough newspapers to sift through each week. We'll see how this goes and maybe I'll start to track how much loot we save each week in coupons from the Sunday paper alone for anyone else on the fence to see if it's worth their time.

Any thoughts or experiences?
 
I used to be a serious coupon clipper for a few years. I got almost all my coupons from the Sunday inserts but I would occasionally find others.

I quit for a few reasons. No stores in my area offer double coupons. It took me a lot of time to make sure the coupons were organized enough that I could find what I needed, ensure that I kept the expired ones cleaned out, and that I didn't overlook one I could use. I found that I was buying something I wouldn't have purchased ordinarily just because it looked interesting and I had a coupon for it.

But the reason that I finally stopped is that we started trying to eat less processed foods and we buy the store brands of shampoo and related products. And so it became harder to find coupons for the stuff we bought. It got to the point that we were using coupons to save just enough to buy the newspaper to get the coupons. So we quit.

That was my experience but it was several years ago so things could have changed. Please keep us apprised. It will be interesting to see what you think.
 
Thanks Lady. We thought about that one- coupons with the store brands. We buy almost exclusively the store generics whenever possible so it will be interesting to see how much more we can save.

I can see buying because you have a coupon being a problem too. I'll remember that.
 
My coupon days have dwindled to nearly none - I have noted the same problems noted by X-lentLady and yourself.

Seldom do I find a coupon for the brand I use - most of mine are generics.
I found I was buying something because of the coupon, not because it was on my list.
Store-hopping for the brands is too tiresome... It really gets wearisome -
I would relate it to prom dress or new shoes shopping with a teenager. Find a parking place, get out, find your product, stand in line, try to turn left coming oo the parking lot, and hitting the next store on your way home, or to the gas station, or the pool hall, or what ever. :toung:

Even with the `coupon carrier' it can be a big hassle.
And the inserts pile up here, because I think I need to go thru them to see if there isn't SOMEthing there I can use, or give to my kids. (One daugh recently sent me a note `mom you don't need to leave me anymore coupons, we are getting them over the internet." (she has a phone or something, that clicks the barcode and then it is in the phone & she gets the coupon that way, somehow or other...unless she was feeding me a line about putting all the coupons/inserts in HER car !!)

Bullitt, You two might consider that avenue from the product web-sites you have on your list; OR you might could make a deal with a neighbor or co-worker who gets the paper, but doesn't use the inserts, take the papers off their hands for them.

There are books and websites by the dozens on how you can save money with the coupons .... So it IS possible, and it DOES work; but not for some of us...:rolleyes:

Just an update here:

The News upgraded us to receive the paper on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the Sunday amount of $119. I enjoy some of the opinion articles and local letters to the editor that I can read on the extra Friday and Saturday so that is a bonus. The paper also tends to hammer the NY government for their budget that was 4 months overdue which is good because it's fun to be in the loop with that mess.

On the coupon front, we're saving at least $10 a week. Some weeks we've done $15-$20. (The biggies are diapers and other baby products). You do have to be careful though. These are the smartest minds in marketing putting out coupons and they are tempting to do the buy 2 save $1 at times, but you must resist unless you really need two!

We also got lucky and found a product recall that we are eligible for in which we are to receive $40. (Time will tell if I get the check or not; we're still waiting on it.)

All in all, I'm going to say the local paper weekend edition has been worth it. Also, we as humans spend too much time in front of a computer.There's just something about being able to flip and fold the pages of a newspaper on a nice Sunday morning while sitting on the front porch with a coffee- even if it costs $119 a year.

I agree - too much time in front of a computer, but by the time I get to read my WSJ, it seems I have heard most of the news already. I always have some news going on in the background at home - either CNBC, or Fox News / FBN, or Bloomberg, or Drudge, Google News, ESPN, etc., so it's gotten to the point that all I read are the opinion pages any more. Oh, and a subscription to the WSJ also gets you the online version. :rolleyes::)
 
I have a friend who worked at USA Today for ~25 years and recently retired. He says that the newspaper industry is going downhill day by day due to competion from internet in loss of readers/subscriptions and advertising revenues. The way he speaks, there's only two people left reading print, and that's Bullitt and myself. Coffee and the newspaper first thing in the morning is manditory for me.

I have a retired friend who is also addicted to the newspaper. I meet him and some other friends once a week for coffee. He shows up at least an hour before the rest of us to read his USA Today.

There has been a change in the last six months... The old dog has a new trick - He now reads his USA Today on a Kindle. :eek: No more licking the fingers to turn the page. :)

Times, they are a chang'in.
 
When an EMP explosion wipes out our computers, we're going to regret not having paper to read. I love the time honored tradition of opening a book or unfolding a newspaper. In my new house, I'm going to build walls worth of book shelfs to store my treasures. When the end of the world comes, I'll be prepared to pass on our knowledge to the younger generations...
 
I love books, must have books, access to printed material in my life. books can be passed on-for the next 100 years. electronic files, not so much. technology changes (think how floppys changed to jazz drives to thumb drives-and the tech to access those storage media, search engines only have so much capacity, power may fail or become limited, budgets may become unable to afford access to what's stored electronically, budgets can always afford books, especially second-hand books.

I read the discarded newspapers while hanging out at Starbucks on a 1/2 hour break. then take the newspaper with me-yes-to block weeds and grass in the garden. :D reduce, recycle, reuse. And sometimes I remember to ask for the used coffee grounds too-for the garden also.
