Riding resistance

1/08/12

The Dow was down over 90-points on a couple of occasions yesterday, but stocks managed a modest afternoon rally and by the close the Dow had lost 51-points on the day.

Debt ceiling negotiations aside, if things go the way I am currently expecting, the analysis might get pretty boring this month. Like in 1987, the market may be looking to slowily ride up along the bottom of the rising resistance line.

Are you yawning yet? I know. I am saying the same thing over and over, but hopefully - for the bulls - this boring move will look a lot like this 1987 chart and we'll be struggling for something interesting to talk about. Boring markets are usually bullish.

If things don't go the way I anticipate (which is more than possible) and the market takes a dive to test the bottom of the rising trading channel, at least we'll have something to talk about.

The dollar moved lower yesterday which may have had something to do with the talk of minting a platinum trillion dollar coin to pay off some debt. Silly, huh? Print money to pay off debt. Do they realize what something like that would do to the dollar? I think they do since they've been doing something similar for a while now. But a trillion dollar coin? Don't they know those can get lost? :)

The VIX continues to fall and our friends at sentimenTrader.com noted:

"The VIX "fear gauge" dropped for its fifth straight day, falling to a four-month low under 14%. The others times it has done so were 11/13/91, 1/18/93, 6/15/94, 12/21/04 and 11/20/06. The next 5-15 days had a flat-to-downside bias but it was generally positive after that."

Alcoa kicks off earnings season after the close today. Not normally a market mover but of course the market movers will be reporting in the coming days and weeks.

Thanks for reading! We'll see you back here tomorrow.
