Welcome Babygirl07 and the first thing you should do is Max out your contributions. The second is spend a lot of time on TSPTALK and try and Maximize your TSP balance.

Use the TSP Retirement Calculator and ensure you are maxed out and if possible, adding the extra $5K in Catch-ups!

Like all the above stated, max out TSP; but please make sure you don't owe anyone JACK! Don't don't your age but I was SS age and FERS and all is well here.

And keep your fingers crossed that OPM has their act together by then. Personally,I retired this past New Year's Eve and haven't looked back. Just get as much as you can in TSP, clear up all debts and max your annual leave carry over.

Hey brookmd, did you ever get your full pay and the OPM packet with all the secret crap we are suppose to have??? I have not as of yet. Retired 31 Dec 10 and I am still getting partial pay..........OPM Sucks btw!

Sure hope they get their act together. I plan on retiring somewhere between 12/31/2011 and 6/1/2012. Did you get lump sum for saved up AL? If so how long did that take?

yes I sold back 448 hours of AL. I have noticed each branch or agency pays you on a different timing. I think brookmd got his AL like in a couple of weeks. Mine AL sell back came in about month after I retired.

Yep, with the USPS my AL was included in my final paycheck the week after I retired. And as mentioned before, we could carry 440 hrs AL, so I could've retired with 648 hrs AL. Problem was I hated job so much I used AL just to get away from the stupid management. Only sold back 300 hrs.

We can carry 240 hours. So if you do not take any leave and retire at the end of the year the max you could have would be 448 hours.
