Retiree Allocations

I retired early at 55, now 58, and have had my TSP in the G Fund since I retired. I was very happy to miss the market downturn.

I was wondering what other retirees' allocations were at this time and if they are considering changing their allocations in the near future. It has been a nice run up but I continue to fear the new economic data so I remain in the G Fund.

As I listened to Greenspan on Sunday talk show he was mostly positive on the economy but with a lot of "caveats" on what could happen to turn things nasty. I also hear reports that the very wealthy are very afraid of this market and I would imagine they know much more than me.

It is a crap shoot and we are alway on the outside looking in. Congrates on retirement and welcome to the mb.

James5v I'll be joining you Jan 2nd will have 37 years.
Welcome to the Message Board and best of luck.:D

I appreciate the responses.

I was offered an early retirement and have never regretted taking advantage of it. Afterward, I changed to a very conservative portfolio and while I did take a beating on about 30% that remained in stocks, it could have been much worse.

BTW, I have never understood someone who has problems adjusting to retirement. It has been great for me. I play in two bands, work two days a week for Samaritan Counseling (a pastoral counseling agency that sees people on a sliding scale) and play golf on Friday. Sometimes, I have to pinch myself to believe I live such a great life.

I can't wait, as you can see I'm counting down the days!! I'm sure I'll have plenty to do, may even finally learn to play my guitars.

Hi James5v and welcome!

I retired on a disability retirement almost two years ago, began using my TSP quickly because of medical bills and so was glad to come back to work part-time when my agency asked if I'd go back to work on intermittent status so they could phone and pick my brain.

I'm using the trendlines of a 5-day EMA and 15-day EMA, along with various other things, to help me decide where I should be. I've been about half in stocks during this run-up and just yesterday went all in, but I'm going to be keeping an eye on things very closely because (as you know( for a retiree capital preservation is job one!

Good luck to those still in the market. So far it sounds like XL-entLady is doing very well.

Being of a cautious nature I am going to remain in the G fund. I will see what happens in the Fall. If our economy is mostly consumer pushed and we have a huge job loss (9.5% getting worse before better) so I can't see things getting that much better. Also, the recent profits have to do with cutting costs rather than a growing economy. Even if I miss some nice profits, I still sleep fine.

BTW, I am off to Destin, Florida tomorrow for a few days for golf. It pays to be frugal but you have to spurge now and then.
