Replacement refs

Everyone is ragging on the replacement refs...I think they are just fine...just as many mistakes as the regular crews...let the players play...the less flags the better

i just hope they don't unionize. because then they'll quit working and demand more. then we'll get stuck with replacement replacement refs.

must be a ravens fan, they just got gifted a win

2 phantom defensive holding calls and even missed the field goal for the win, lol.

Ain't that the truth! I've only watched a couple games this year, but even the announcers were ripping on the replacements in both games. Last night's Ravens-Pats was absolutely ridiculous though. It wasn't just the bad calls. There were numerous bad no-calls on top of that!

Yeah, too many ticky-tack calls, and no flags after the players are swinging at each other. Of course we have to remember these guys were doing Div II and high school games not long ago and the rules are slightly different. It's a shame things have to come to this. I don't even know what the dispute is about.

The game is too fast for them. It's like sending paintballers into Iraq.....................except there is no instant replay and you don't get an opportunity for a makeup call...........

Yeah, they need to throw more flags and eject players that are fighting. That will calm them down real quick.

It's funny...we need to give the replacement refs a fair shot...they deserve the shot to be referees...Obama says we all need a chance and a fair shot...we are all equal and deserve equal outcomes...give them their fair shot

Wait just a dog-gone minute. I've seen two games where teams won only because of multiple bogus calls by these refs. As Al Michael said last night on Sunday Night Football, these refs "are not qualified" to be officating at this level. Refs shouldn't consistently influence the outcome of a game -- and that's what these novices did and are doing. No fault of theirs -- they just aren't qualified.

i can't believe how biased the media is, all they did all night was complain about the refs, like the union paid them off to squawk about the replacements to get their buddies their jobs back.

the last play was a joke, packers #37 intentionally backs into the offensive players hands and takes a huge flop to draw a call while jennings climbs right up and over the reciever's back. simultaneous possession, touchdown, nuff said.

the post game show is even worse, steve young preaching like the whole world is ending i thought he was gonna bust out with fake tears. and that other guy too, 'insulting my intelligence' boohoo you cry babies, go work for the wwf if that's the kind of show you're going to put on.

Two words: a genda! Backs into the offensive players and takes a huge flop?

What game were you watching? Here's a highlight for others to see and judge for themselves: The Defining Image Of The NFL Replacement Ref Fiasco - Business Insider

... I don't even know what the dispute is about.

It is about the pensions of current and future employees. The millionairs who own the NFL teams have locked out the refs in an attempted to get them to agree to eliminate their pensions. These are employees who have worked for years, based on the knowledge that when they are old, and can't run up and down the field any more, that they would get a defined benefit pension. NFL owners now want to take that away.

Daily Kos: NFL wants to freeze referee pensions not because it can't afford them, but because it thinks it can

Let's just review what this job action is about.

The NFL Refs are not on strike, they are locked out. That's a big difference.

They don't want anything more than they have, they just don't want to lose what they already have and have been promised through the years.

The NFL makes billions and their brand hinges on the integrity of the game.

The Refs safe guard that integrity, and a pension is a small item in securing that integrity.

Now you can see how important experience and competence is at such a high level, pressure job.

Last night's game was just an example of what football fans from all over America are going through.

Sunday night, those up in Boston went through a similar evening.

Their owner, Bob Kraft, is one of the biggest culprits in all of this. He's been an anti-union maggot in everything he does (he built "Patriot Place" with non-union labor). His son, Jonathan, is worse than he is.

Now, I know that some of my union brothers and sisters - soimne even of the Wisconsin ones- voted for Scott Walker in his recall. I know that was more than the margin of victory. I also know that if Scott Walker was removed from office, it would have had no baring on last night's game.

However, the dispute between the NFL owners and the NFL Refs is a perfect example of a very rich corporation that makes billions and doesn't want to share a small portion of that profit with some of those that are responsible for helping to create that profit. Not an increasing share- but a steady share. The greed of owners to get THAT much more if the pie is on full display.

Last night, that point was brought home, vividly, to the people of Wisconsin, and to the fans around the nation who are watching.

The irony should not be lost on anyone.

This is the struggle going on across America now.

More so now that it's been in decades. The choices could not be more clear.

Big, rich wealthy greed vs. the common man.

Which side are you on?

Are you high?!

Golden Tate CLEARLY shoved #37 with both arms in the back creating space. Tate NEVER had possession of the ball. Jennings skied over the 5' 10" Tate, caught the ball, had it against HIS body as he came down. There was NO simultaneous possession. It's bad enough that call was botched. The defensive pass interference earlier in the drive was also complete BS! Shields had position and was going for the ball. Rice was draped all over Shields, pulling Shield's right shoulder around. Finally that was NOT roughing the passer when the Packers intercepted Wilson.

Hopefully these HORRIBLE officials didn't change the outcome of the playoffs.

I wonder if referees consider themselves a "brotherhood", just like Marines, police, firefighters, teachers, etc. If so, perhaps they are making bad calls so there brothers can get their jobs back and keep their pensions?

I'll try to relate this issue to TSP Talk/markets. I like watching the effects of this lockout because I'm a free market guy. And I've noticed fewer and fewer folks enjoy a true free market (e.g., the Fed, IMF, Eurozone, Congressional bailouts, Obamacare, anti-"scalping" laws, "price gouging" laws, etc.). I like watching supply and demand work. I like watching negotiations when both sides have some bargaining power. And I like watching people with exceptional skills and experience get rewarded for those skills and experience.

NFL officials have a very special skill set that very few people on the planet have. This skill set is almost always unnoticed by the public (e.g., sports radio morons) until something like a lockout happens, but it is absolutely necessary for this level of football. In other words, we've got a situation involving low supply (great officiating ability and experience) and high demand for it, and that means higher price/wages/benefits. If I were representing the NFL officials, I'd make it clear that the officials' demands would be going up, not down, every week.

It's interesting to watch all the anti-free market sentiment revolving around this issue (but it's usually couched in terms such as "anti-union"). Anger against the officials because "this is only a part-time job for them" or whatever--these arguments are irrelevant. Again, it's a simple case of supply and demand. The NFL and the owners are not the bad guys, and the officials are not the bad guys. Both groups are trying to represent their interests. The NFL is an entertainment organization. It is free to offer officials whatever it wants. And the officials are free to demand and agree to whatever they want. If there is no meeting of the minds, then the officials don't get paid, and the NFL is free to use anybody they want to officiate games. But the organization must deal with the fallout of using replacement officials (who are doing the best they can but don't have the necessary skills to manage games). If you're a free market person, take time to enjoy this lockout!
