Post Office: Will there be one in 20 years?

The country can't afford to keep throwing away tax revenue to cover the USPS running in the red like this forever. 15B loss in one year??? WOW Compare that to BP's "big settlement" yesterday that was only 4.5B. If UPS and FedEx can do it cheaper and better, that's the way to go. Maybe just have USPS handle very rural locations.

With news like this: Link - 15B LOSS:sick:

How can we even think it would still exist...well, here comes another 5 years of no pay raise.

It will be a sad day for America if the US Post Office ever did close it's doors and succumb to privatization..The USPS is an American Icon...I don't care if Stamps were a $1.00 per letter it would be worth it to me to have them carry my mail when; “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

Oh my Gosh!! You must have been feeling super patriotic :D and I admire that -- You honestly expressed yourself 'outstanding'.

I feel like I'm listening to Sarah Palin (or any Politician - giving the glazed polished speech) -- BUT -- Yours sounds from the heart.

Well I personally could care less if Private Industry takes over as long as the job gets done and the 'Services Provided' are everything we could hope for.

I think it's SMART - and here are a few perks I'd provide. Go to one of my offices and you can write letters (or whatever) on Pads scattered throughout the room. This way it has YOUR Personalized touch.

Type wherever you want it sent and it immediately comes out in another 'Office' close to the address. Here my employees will put the letter in an envelope and hand deliver it.

With my Business - a letter does not have to go from Maryland to California and then finally find the place it's meant to go. I would offer this for 20 cents per letter -- anywhere.

That's just the start -- because it's the first thought off the top -- BUT if I offered far better Service at less than HALF the Cost....

I'd be a very rich man Buster. I could take Blue to Hawaii and have a 'Blue Hawaii'. Gosh with that kind of money I'd have a Blue Blue Blue Blue Christmas.

I have thus far refused to read that article because of the first line...

Losing money is not one of our "rolls in America." What a bullsh!t way to start a supposed "news" article in the WSJ...

As far as whether there will be a Post Office 20 years from now? Who knows. I just need 2404 more days but who's counting?

Exactly.
So much for investigative journalism.
What kind of role does that serve in America, to just regurgitate talking points.
The propaganda machine is in overdrive.

The U.S. Postal Service plays two roles in America: an agency that keeps rural areas linked to the rest of the nation, and one that loses a lot of money.

Mostly Kiosks and vending machines.

Handling needs to be reviewed though. You will need handlers for manual tasks.

I hold my mail by requesting it through the interent and get stamps the same way.....

There will always be a need for post offices. I just think that BULK mail should cost more.
