Small plane crashes into Austin building

By TERRI LANGFORD and GARY SCHARRER HOUSTON CHRONICLE

Feb. 18, 2010, 11:48AM

AUSTIN — Authorities say a small private plane has crashed into a seven-story office building in Austin, leaving one person inside unaccounted for.

A person close to the investigation said the home of the suspected pilot, whose name was not released, burned down Wednesday night. The Cirrus SR22 took off from Georgetown at 9:40 a.m. today and struck the building at 9430 Research Boulevard in northwest Austin minutes later, federal officials said.

CNN, quoting a federal official it did not name, reported the plane was stolen.

The structure that was hit houses private firms and government offices, including the Internal Revenue Services' criminal investigation unit. The FBI is not a tenant, contrary to some initial reports.

Black smoke was coming from the second and third stories of the the building at midday as fire crews using ladder trucks and hoses battled the fire. Austin Assistant Fire Chief Harry Evans said it appeared the plane struck the second floor.

Police said two people were hospitalized and one was unaccounted for from the building. The conditions of the injured people were not immediately available.
Evans said no deaths from inside the building were confirmed and the firefighting efforts continued as of 11:45 a.m.

Police said there were several street closures and power outages in the area.

The Austin American-Statesman reported that eyewitnesses said the plane appeared to strike the Echelon 1 building at full throttle.

Peggy Walker, an IRS revenue officer who works in the building said she was sitting at her desk when the plane crashed.

“It felt like a bomb blew off. The ceiling caved in and windows blew in. We got up and ran,” she said.
Matt Farney, 39, who was in the parking lot of a nearby Home Depot, said he saw a low-flying private plane near some apartments and the office building just before it crashed.

“I figured he was going to buzz the apartments or he was showing off,” Farney said, adding that the plane dipped down. “It was a ball of flames that was high or higher than the apartments. It was surreal. It was insane. ... It didn’t look like he was out of control or anything.”

Chris Messer told the newspaper he was driving to work shortly before 10 a.m. when the small yellow plane flew in front of him and into the structure.

“The fireball was pretty big. It shook my car and the heat came in from my air vents. I was surprised how big the explosion is,” said Messner, 27.

Messner said the explosion was “as wide as the entire building.”

The problem is there are more Joe Stacks out there that feel the way he felt after many years of fighting the bureaucracy.

Bet nobody is going to call this an act of terrism. And they shouldn't. he was just a troubled "nut"...just like the other nuts who snap.

National Review just dubbed him: "The Teabag Terrorist".
http://corner.nationalreview.com/pos...zY4OWJiNThkNjk=

To me it sounds like the author of that article is saying that someone in the media will surely label him as such, not that he is "dubbing him" that himself. He doesn't think that label would fit.

From the article:
"There is absolutely zero doubt in my mind that we are T-minus fifteen seconds from Mr. Joseph Andrew Stack being renamed "The Tea-Bag Terrorist!" or some such by the media and his crime laid at the feet of the Right, but I thought it might be worth mentioning anyway that his political views don't fit comfortably into any category I'm aware of, if he really is the author of this manifesto."

"I am not suggesting that Stack was motivated by leftist ideology, only that attempts to link his lashing-out to "right-wing anger" at the government would be misguided indeed."

Yep I can see it coming when Oberman and Madcow get hold of this thing!

"The recent presidential puppet GW Bush and his cronies in their eight years certainly reinforced for all of us that this criticism rings equally true for all of the government."

No need to take a cheap shot at the Tea Party on this one. Will be interesting when this whole story comes out though.

But...it does validate Homeland Security's warning of "Domesttic Terror-Anti Gov't people" being our biggest threat.

Wonder if that's what George III said in 1773. Always starts with a little sumthin sumthin. For now, and hopefully in the future, it's confined to individuals...but there's clearly a growing level of discontent. Most unfortunate.

I agree. From the parts of the manifesto (pages long) that is being reported, this guy is all over the place with his anger. So pick and choose if you want, but he gores everyones sacred cow and has covered all our complaints from socialist lovers to us Constitutionalists.

There are whack jobs on every side, just like the lady prof, that went beserk. These folks are outliers and I ignore them as being representative of either side. Somewhere along the line, wires have gotten crossed in these folks mind and I don't consider them to be representative of either side.

But folks are getting mad about the excessive spending that has been going on for decades and I think we'll have more of this.

As I said in another post, the rats (Pols) are jumping ship because they see what is coming down the pike and don't want to part of it. I see it coming. :(

Time Magazine now has a write-up: All IRS employees accounted for. (thankfully.)

"According to news reports, 199 IRS employees work in the building, and all are accounted for. Toward the end of what appears to be his final note, Stack wrote, "Well, Mr. Big Brother IRS man, let's try something different; take my pound of flesh and sleep well." (See the making of the Tea Party movement.)

"The White House was quick to say the incident was not a plot by overseas terrorists. But was it terrorism nevertheless? In his note, Stack was very clear he was unhappy with the U.S. government. He complained about onerous and merciless taxation of individuals like him as well as corruption and the special treatment the executives of big corporations allegedly received after their companies failed. And he seemed to be as emboldened as any suicide bomber. In the Web note of more than 3,000 words, he wrote, "I ... know that by not adding my body to the count, I insure nothing will change. I choose to not keep looking over my shoulder at big brother while he strips my carcass, I choose not to ignore what is going on all around me, I choose not to pretend that business as usual won't continue; I have just had enough." He signed off, "Joe Stack (1956-2010)."

Having read just the first post -- it was obvious the man decided enough is enough and he committed suicide.

I'm sorry everyone for sounding calloused -- and I've still got hours to go but need a little break.

This man -- in my opinion -- deserves 'no sympathy' or 'attention' and even dwelling on anything to do with him simply serves his plan for attention.

He was hugely a 'failure' and blamed almost everything imaginable for his miserable life. Somehow he eventually came to the conclusion that by doing some ridiculous huge event -- he'd draw attention and maybe there would be the inkling of a chance that others would see him as some kind of mayrter (sp) -- some hidden hero who knew his Rahm and ultimately 'sacrificed' his life so all could see his message of truth and justice.

He was a sick (opposite of female dog) - that was miserable and was pretty worthless - and ended his life by doing some ridiculous stunt - to somehow have his moment of glory.

Well he's not getting it from me -- he's not a terrorist -- he's nothing and not even worth me expressing this -- but I do all to counter his ridiculous attempt to get any recognition.

ok -- my 2 cents -- brake is over
