Our watches

Mine is a Casio Lineage Waveceptor. It is solar powered so it never needs a battery. Also, it receives time calibration radio signals at night which keep the displayed time accurate, never needs adjustment. The face does not have any numbers so that could be a bit of a drawback but I think I"m more impressed with the technology than anything else. List price is a bit steep at $300 but I paid less than half that buying when it was on sale and and additional discount with a coupon at a local department store chain.

last watch i owned was between '89 and '94, pretty sure it was early 90's around the time i made bosun, shark watch did the job.

this isn't how i recall it but the basic framework is the same. low profile, dependable utility, did not set me back too much, was deductable anyway.

didn't even wear it on my wrist too much gear to see it there anyway, would just strap it to the frame around the crane controls, easy to see critical time/interval info to record in a 'write in the rain' memo book.

went through two of them and numerous bands, but they held up well through a wide range of conditions. they had this plastic clip that would pinch the skin every time i put it on, only tried it a few times before i decided i would not wear one.

time was irrelevant there anyway, even calendars could not track very well until a bit before the end of the season, but there were much more reliable indicators for telling that than a dam clock. it was time when it was time, or when the skipper or mate yelled 'let's go boys'.

now i like that seiko buster posted, black face with black nylon strap, but official website doesn't have them.

looking for something similar, would sacrifice day/date function for glow in the dark. maybe christmas will be kind, working the budget now.

Did you know that those Tritium Gas tubes last for 25 years?(that's what the T25 stands for on the face)...I thought that was what was so cool about them, along with they never need external light to activate them...Also that the maker of each watch must register it with the NRC...

Cooooool! (I can imagine the conversation now) (me) "hey man" .... (my buddy)"whut?"...(me again)"My watch is radio-active! (my buddy...again) "Nu UUH!......(me again) NO SERIOUSLY!....it's ....a n u c l e a r watch" (my buddy) "Woaaa...Like.... totally awesome" .....HA!

Now imagine my voice as spongebob squarepants and my buddy's voice as his friend Patrick, and imagine these 2 guys sittin in a room that looks like the nasa space control room with low level lighting and department of homeland security logos and dhs and american flags plastered all over the place while they are having this stupid conversation, and you'll have an idea of what my daily work life is like ...HAHAHAHA!

Spongebob and Patrick!...On the frontlines of the war on "TERROR"...ooooohhhh!

Here is my "ultimate" "must have" watch. I fell in love with this little masterpiece when I first saw it, it has everything I want, especially the cool little gas tubes that are brighter than bright:D

Frixxxx my friend, you and I think so much alike-I wear female version or something very similar, when I wear one at all. similar reasons too. burro and I also have similar needs too. I need waterproof and breakaway too, for the just in cases. hard duty, not too painful on the wallet if gets lost in the woods or water. but I mostly rely on clocks nearby these days during work hours and around town.

Bought a TIMEX EXPEDITION 10 years ago. $30 USD. It's taken it's licks and still ticks.....you can keep those fancy timekeepers....I'll invest the cash!

On the off chance that this thread really is about wondering what timepieces we have, here's mine. Yes, I agree that the wrist watch you choose tells you a lot about a person. :D

I can't even carry this around on my wrist anymore. So I have a cheap Timex and I use this one to check the time on the Timex. And the five clocks I have in the living room. :embarrest:

Love the G Shock watches. I have two, because I lost one and found it again after buying the second.:embarrest:

I kinda like the look of some of the Oakley watches. I might save up for this one for my next watch purchase.

Men are lucky: most women can't wear any "big numbers for bad eyes" watches because they are wider than our wrists. I wear a unisex Fossil watch that is meant for the Asian market (mail order is my friend). It's not as small as most women's watches, but I still need my reading glasses to read the date in the tiny little square. At least I can read the time, and it looks ok for work.

It looks a lot like the attached file, except the background is lime green rather than white.

Casio G Shock for over 25 years. I'm hard on watches and this one has held up for over 25 years, but have went thru about 5 bands. Some nice looking watches here. I have one that is just an old fashion sweep hand, big numbers that are like many shown here. Nice, simple and old fashion looking. Big numbers for bad eyes. (Pre bifocal days) and glows in dark for the little boy in me. :D

i like the lines and low profile of this one but too simple

View attachment 9927

this one has nice lines to but way too complex, what the heck are all the twisty turny things for?

View attachment 9928

of the two in the video you posted i'd go for the one on the right, more compact and functional, less jazzy, but those both seem to be a good middle ground.

pulsar it was? what model? i'll keep looking along those lines. where do you find them in person? wal-mart? pawn shop? jeweler? have to put my hands on it first and see it or at least get a feel for comparables. then probably buy new online, just the way i am.

so i checked that link out, items seem to be changing all the time. one of them was in my available today price range and only 2 more minutes left to bid... i can see how that could be addictive and dangerous to the budget.

i imagine everyone has different tastes and technical requirements, but here is what i've figured out so far...

metal band won't work for me, leather, or maybe nylon web adjustable ok too, but clasp would be something to pay attention too. i liked the simple lines of invicta slim but no features, probably would want at least a date and a see in the dark function. definately has to be waterproof to some extent, maybe down 20 feet or so, if i'm down farther than that then it's an accident and no watch is going to help, only seconds i'm concerned about at that point is how many to my next breath, deeper and i'm dead, shallower and it's just playing who cares what time it is.

previous careers and current interests make anything snag prone and not breakaway or at least emergency cuttable a poor choice.

no, i don't have any watches. but i'm thinking about getting one now, some cool stuff i didn't know even existed.

didn't mean to pee in your wheaties, thanks for the welcome.

what would you recommend for a starter? not digital, not the finest, but something with enough capability to familiarize oneself with what's out there?
I know you asked Fishegg, sorry..But here is a selection to look at on ebay (just for the selection, once you find one, google it if you don't do ebay..I do ebay a lot and have had great success with buying and selling)

Anyways..INVICTA makes some very nice entry level Swiss watches..

I guess so, your beef with someone else isn't my concern....... got any cool watches? ;)

Hey buster that is SOME watch you got yourself there, beautiful, I really have to say since having a piece that uses the tritium bulbs i am impressed, that watch you have is all class. And to the other guy that said he has a omega speedmaster ...I have one word for the speedmaster..."Awesome". I have not been able to find a good one under 1k though (I don't wanna even ask how much that ball watch costs, I'm guessing around 3k or so), and my wife "refuses" to allow me to spend that much still on a watch ( she was not happy I spent $250 for my evo)...Pffff...WOMEN! I found a timex (I'm not much of a fan) that I could probably live with, here it is (pic below) I'm thinking about getting it, because it does have some pretty cool features; Compass,thermometer,high/low tide setting, and the video I saw on youtube shows it actually working, so i dunno, it's still what I would consider "cheap" at around 120-140$ I guess at that price if it craps out on me I can shrug it off. Does anyone know if they are reliable or worth it or what? When I retire I'm gonna get me a speedmaster...well... I'm gonna ask my wife if I can get one......NOT!!!

I've had the Speedmaster for a few years and wear it everyday. My spouse has a much nicer Breitling; however, it rarely gets worn. I'm leaning towards a Rolex Submariner in classic steel and black for my next purchase. But the Breitling's have my eye too. Who knows, maybe a Tag Heuer Carrera chronograph at the right price might find my wrist first.

We all have our different interests and vices - to each their own...
