One turtle at a time

If a plane crashes we should ban all planes
If a car crashes we should ban all cars
If drilling kills just one turtle...ban all drilling
If we can save one turtle...it's all worth it

Turtles? Tortoises? Looking for something else and saw this thread and read the first post. Part of it:

If drilling kills just one turtle...ban all drilling
If we can save one turtle...it's all worth it

Reminded me of a twist in the latest "if you molest one of these creatures we will fire you, prosecute you, take everything you have and environmentalists will probably fire bomb your house" training about Desert Tortoises.

Uh Oh - PO had a thought, delete this now!

In previous years the lecture was given by a lawyer who assumed we were roaming the desert with a k-bar in our teeth looking for things to kill and showed us pictures of various sized tortoises down to about six inchs. This year it was an environmental/biologist/historian/granola type who actually seemed to care about stuff but was also pragmatic enough to know that the existing infrastructure needs attention and new infrastructure will be built. The presenter also seemed to realize that if we have a k-bar we usually keep it in a sheath on our belt. Until we see an animal that is.

This year we were shown slides of actual work sites where protected species/things lived. There was a very cute one of a Desert Tortoise next to a car key that was a real eye opener. The shelled one was less than an inch across. Of course there must be babies but no one told us to watch for them before and since I'm a troglodyte I never thought of it. Another thing to be aware of while driving the right of way and before putting down the outrigger.

Many questions were asked at that point and the granola explained that was why it is important they do the surveys and unless it was an emergency they would be on site if endangered things were found. All granola asked was for us to be aware.

IMHO one small step for a training program and one giant leap for a mandatory federal program.

Credit to Neil Armstrong for the paraphrase. RIP sir.
