Oil below $88 after surprise US supply jump

Oil drops below $88 in Europe after report shows US crude supplies jumped unexpectedly

  • Wednesday August 31, 2011, 8:32 am
LONDON (AP) -- Oil prices slipped below $88 a barrel on Wednesday after a report showed U.S. crude supplies unexpectedly jumped last week, a sign demand may be weakening.
Benchmark oil for October delivery fell $1.16 to $87.74 by early afternoon European time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude rose $1.63 to settle at $88.90 on Tuesday.
In London, Brent crude for October delivery was down 35 cents at $113.67 on the ICE Futures exchange.
The American Petroleum Institute said late Tuesday that crude inventories rose 5.1 million barrels last week while analysts surveyed by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., had predicted a drop of 1.2 million barrels.

Gladly take a tree over a barrel of oil any time. Better in every possible way.
That has to be the most ignorant thing I've seen anyone say...Again people are quick to spew their person agenda and lick leaves for the sake of saying the green buzz words..Little do most of you tree hugging do-gooders realize, that almost EVERYTHING you wear, use, eat or live in has EVERYTHING to do with OIL, even the computer you're typing your drivel on..without it, you would be huddled up in a cave somewhere rubbing your trees together to make fire...Wise up and get off the righteouse green ban wagon.

Ummm...they swooped in on a failed deal that BP was trying to make. They are trading tech for access to A LOT of oil.

Yes it's business, but let's not proliferate patently false conclusions. Moratorium on drilling in the Gulf was lifted last October.

But if you want to mull over speculative conclusions consider this; if Exxon botches a well near Russia (happens all the time and the Arctic will be a particularly risky place to drill given depths, seasonal sea ice and freezing temps) ...they wont see the same kind of hatred from the general public that BP saw by botching a well off the Gulf Coast. Not many people live there and it's Russia so the press coverage will be minimal. The pressure is from the public not regulatory agencies.

Really? I hadn't ever considered that. You've totally enlightened me. Gee, Thanks!

I was replying to your unprovoked buzzword insult with my own blather, following your simplistic lead. I was talking in good fun, but apparently that doesn't work for you...you gotta put up dukes.

You are espousing the exact kind of microcosm thinking that is crippling our country. Issues ARE NOT binary, there is gray btw black and white there is no need to feel as if the only switch position is on or off. But still at the end of the day if I told I had one more day on this planet; I would spend that day outside in a natural environment, leaning my back against a tree as opposed to surrounded by a bunch of rusting metal, broken e-junk with my back against a dirty barrel of oil. And you know what, though you wouldn't likely I admit it. I'd bet it all that you would make the exact same choice. I don't know maybe you go oil refinery to have coffee on a pleasant Saturday morning...but I highly doubt it.

So we agree..It's the Liberal media that vilianizes the OIL companies and their exploration efforts..Of course Exxon and BP have been put on the burner for their accidents (the two biggies that keep being brought up)..But in case you missed the reports now just one year later in the GOM..the waters and beaches have never been cleaner or better in all respects...as in all types of industry..Feces occurs:cool:

Obama Picks Gas Tax For First Round of Fiscal Fight

Obama Starts Fall Campaign with Defense of Gas Tax

“Today, POTUS will call for extension of the transportation bill which expires 9/30. If not extended, nearly a million will be out of work. Normally, we wouldnt have to worry about this, but the FAA debacle shows we cant assume people wont use it as a chance to drive their agenda”
-- Tweet from White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer
President Obama wants Congress to quickly pass an unconditioned extension of the federal gasoline tax, which is set to expire at the end of the government’s fiscal year on Sept. 30. The federal gas tax has been 18.4 cents per gallon since 1993 and generates more than $32 billion a year that is then mostly passed out to states for road construction and repair. About 15 percent goes to other federal efforts, like subsidizing public transportation or other efforts to discourage driving. The average American motorist pays about $100 a year in the federal tax.
Conservatives in Congress want to cut out the federal middleman and allow states to raise and spend their own road money. Not only would letting states collect the taxes directly reduce the money spent on federal behavioral engineering efforts (bike paths etc.), but would also allow states to avoid federal laws that require union workers be used on highway projects.

I don't drink coffee, it rots your insides and is addictive..You were talking in good fun?..Really?..Now that is funny! Especially now that your pants are down around your knees.

…On the other hand, I like to live without some nut job telling me that I'm killing the planet, you and the Daryl Hannah types fit right along well with the global warming hype-nics and hypocrites...Wherever or whatever it is you live in, I bet it has oil soaked shingles on the roof and tons of oil byproducts inside, such as carpet, linoleum flooring and other man-made materials that are made from OIL…But again you and your likes condemn the game and the players that produce, but I bet you would not live without the conveniences they bring you, but you’d rather parrot the fashionably political buzz rhetoric..

The well sights are being reclaimed and cleaned up, I live in oil producing State and I see it being done, so that old bull don't run anymore, this is the 21st Century ya know...Yeah go lean up against a nice old tree..I like to do that too...But after all the leaning is done, you head for the Car to drive home on your asphalt roads to your plastic world you call home...Walk a mile in their shoes and know the jobs the oil industry creates before the you spew your righteous condemning drivel.

Haole boy - The last time I was in OK, I don't remember seeing too many trees. Maybe that's why you don't understand the "tree hugging" concept. I prefer hugging papaya and mango trees over here. :D
(and don't yell at me, I'm teasing u)

PS maybe I should send you some pakalolo from Puna. peace!

You were talking in good fun?..Really?..Now that is funny! Especially now that your pants are down around your knees.

I point out fallacies in an argument and you call me an ignorant tree hugger and now my pants are down? I'm not really even sure what you mean but I'm guessing you're implicating my last response as evidence that I'm being argumentative. Damn straight I'm being argumentative now. I'm trying to see if I can get anything other than a flippant regurgitation of talking points from you.

Same talking point as before; yes, our current economy is drenched in oil. I have known that for a long time. I got it the first time and I still get it. I understand there are consequences affiliated w/ that kind of economy...which is something you apparently have failed to grasp. For example, insulting someone usually leads to a response and your blood pressure will rise. Actions have consequences, be careful w/ that blood pressure.
Furthermore, I don't even know who Daryl Hannah is but I knew about the Keystone XL protests long before he/she was arrested. I do know who Bill Mckibben is and he orchestrated the whole affair. At any rate, we all make choices in life and I strive to make choices I'm comfortable with in mine. Not using oil in this economy is completely impractical. That, by itself, doesn't mean we all have bask in the glory of wonderful, glorious ooey gooey crude. We play the hand we're dealt. If you need to bolster your conscience by attacking those who might disagree with the life you've selected, well that's your problem, not mine.

For what it's worth. Life, even human life, even civilized human life...hell even if you think god put humans on earth for the sole purpose of using natural resources...existed on this planet well before the discovery of oil and the current oil boom. So please send this Limbaugh, Hannity, O'reilly, Beck et al. garble about rubbing sticks together in a cave back to the dungeon of ill-reasoned metaphors.
but you’d rather parrot the fashionably political buzz rhetoric..
Fashionable, eh? It's what I'd call traction. I'm sorry if this makes you uncomfortable but as you say this is the 21st century. Some folks have a hard time adapting.
The well sights are being reclaimed and cleaned up, I live in oil producing State and I see it being done, so that old bull don't run anymore, this is the 21st Century ya know...
Good, would you prefer they weren't being reclaimed and cleaned up? With all your insults to tree huggers and calling them ignorant and all it sounds like that's the argument you are wanting to make. I doubt that's true but If so, you can have it. I am all for reclamation. Heck I'll take it one step further...now that we are in the 21st century (as opposed to the 19th and 20th) let's use resources in a manner that doesn't require so much reclamation. Reclamation is expensive and I don't know of any way to reclaim contaminated groundwater yet. I like groundwater. Does that make me an ignorant tree hugger? Are the local farmers that want to use clean groundwater ignorant tree huggers? You are in OK? You do realize that your water comes primarily from the largest freshwater aquifer in existence right? Hope for you and your kids and grandkids sake it stays safe...but if not, remember as in all industries "feces happens"
Yeah go lean up against a nice old tree..I like to do that too...
Good to see we agree on something. ;)
But after all the leaning is done, you head for the Car to drive home on your asphalt roads to your plastic world you call home...Walk a mile in their shoes and know the jobs the oil industry creates before the you spew your righteous condemning drivel.
I'll do it well aware of potential destruction my conveniences cause and do what I can to support rather than insult those who want to work toward a balanced approach. I'll vote at the ballot, I'll vote with my speech and I"ll vote with my $$$s because that's the hand I was dealt.

Who appointed you as the Fallacy police?..you are entitled to your opinion, even if you are wrong and wrong you are..but most people let others maybe assume you are ignorant, but you opened your mouth and removed all doubt.

You bore me with same old rhetoric.. BTW ..God is a proper noun and would be so spelled.

Hey you hula girl from the land of Tom Selleck, Don Ho, Pineapples, Macadamia nuts and lava rocks..….don’t you have some cellulose pulp paper products to deliver, the ones made out of pulverized wood (trees) ?..

BTW; Contrary to stereo typical belief, Oklahoma has plenty of trees and big ones too..Watch world news tonight..we should be making headlines with all the wildfires consuming some of our trees right now.

You need to visit more of the State next time...I'll show you arround and in the woods..

PS; I'd much rather you send me some Maui Wowie ..:cheesy:

She's was in a few main stream movies. Not a great actress, but she looked pretty good back in the day.

True, but I think that our quality of life far outstrips that of our ancestors.
I know I've said it before, but I'm hopeful that the development of fuels and other chemicals derived from Algae will become commercially viable. There are companies investing in this research, but I think we are a long way from replacing oil. Until then, we need to drill for our own oil here, so that we aren't dependent on countries that hate us for our oil needs.

I don't agree with taxing the oil companies to fund alternative fuel research. The oil companies won't pay the tax. The consumers will. If you want to fund alternative research, then do it. Find a company conducting the research and buy some stock. Who knows, you might become an alternative fuels millionare one day.

The cruel truth is there is nothing that we have that can even come close to replacing Oil. In the mean time how about working on some kind of new catalytic converters or something practical, it's hard to believe that we can go to the moon and lack the ability to invent something that can filter out all of the toxins in exhaust. Just bitching and crying won't keep the country going, we need energy.
