Rough seas foil testing of giant skimmer 'A Whale'; will continue when weather improves

NEW ORLEANS
Choppy seas have temporarily foiled attempts to see if a giant skimmer can be a silver bullet for cleanup efforts in the Gulf of Mexico.
Bob Grantham, spokesman for Taiwanese shipping firm TMT, says the company's vessel, dubbed "A Whale," will need further testing off the coast of Louisiana.
Grantham said in an e-mail Monday that conditions in the Gulf over the weekend were too choppy to get definitive answers on the vessel's capability.
Billed as the world's largest oil skimmer, A Whale is supposed to be able to suck up 21 million gallons of oily water per day.
Grantham says testing will resume as soon as the water is calmer.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil futures on Tuesday fell for the seventh time, leaving a move higher behind as the U.S. stock market pared gains.
Crude for August delivery lost 35 cents, or 0.5%, to $71.79 a barrel, its lowest price in a month. The drop coincided with stocks surrendering much of their earlier gains but remaining in the black, as consumer-discretionary and telecom shares lagged. [more]

The Obama administration asked a federal appeals court Tuesday to reinstate a moratorium on deepwater petroleum drilling, saying it is needed to reduce the chance of a second spill similar to the one now spewing crude into the Gulf of Mexico.
The fallout from that spill, the result of an April 20 explosion on a drilling rig leased by BP, was evident in the Gulf region Tuesday, as tar balls lapped onto the Texas coast and oil was sighted in New Orleans's Lake Pontchartrain.

Appeals Court Rejects U.S. Bid to Keep Drilling Moratorium

July 8, 2010: A federal appeals court on Thursday rejected the federal government's effort to restore an offshore deepwater drilling moratorium.

NEW ORLEANS -- A federal appeals court on Thursday rejected the federal 's effort to restore an offshore deepwater drilling moratorium, opening the door to resumed drilling in the Gulf while the legal fight continues.
The ruling is not the final word on the Obama administration's fight to suspend new drilling projects so it can study the risks revealed by the disastrous BP oil spill.
The same is expected to hear arguments on the merits of the moratorium case in late August or early September.
While it's possible that 33 exploratory wells suspended by the moratorium could resume drilling, companies might not bother with the expense while the ultimate future of the projects hangs in the balance. [more]

Still good news..

But, In other words, until it is settled, they will remain idle...Can't say that I blame them..Why keep drilling only to have it stopped again maybe?

It's kinda like the USA banning all driving because of the Toyoto recalls.
