The oil price has rebounded as markets refocus on the Middle East, as well as Japan's energy needs.

Brent crude futures broke back above $113 a barrel, while US light, sweet crude reached $100 again.
With Libyan production already near zero, markets took fright at the turmoil in Bahrain and the risk it may spread to neighbouring Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, with much of Japan's nuclear power sector shut down, the country is set to increase energy imports. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12774106

Faster Permitting Demands Larger Staff – Bromwich

Until the federal office that oversees offshore drilling gets more money for personnel, it won't be able to speed up a permit review process that the oil industry says is so slow it is costing jobs, the agency's director warned Thursday.

"Unless we get a lot more permitting personnel now, the rate necessarily has to slow down," Michael Bromwich, director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement, said of approvals.

The Obama administration has asked for money to hire 41 additional permitting personnel -- almost double the existing staff -- and 116 additional offshore inspectors -- triple the current number.

They did. They asked for the 41 additional staff in the budget in July, after the BP well blew out.
And they have 150 Deep Water Gulf Well Inspectors in the proposed 2011 Budget, an increase from the 50 inspectors they had before. That's all in the Obama 2011 budget proposal submitted to Congress. http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2011/02/president_obamas_proposed_budg.html

Congress (Guess which party?) has held it up since then.

With Obama, Media Silent on High Gas Prices

Pain At The Pump, Where’s The Media?
by Ron Futrell - BIG JOURNALISM - 12/13/2010

EXCERPT:
Quote:
Of course, Obama’s reaction has been to close off-shore drilling and restrict more US land to drilling. The Bush actions of allowing more drilling and increasing US independence led to those low prices of 2008. Yes, policies in the White House can make a difference and are making a difference today to the rising prices.
Gas prices have nearly doubled under Barack Obama, meanwhile the media watches from the sidelines and complains without pointing out where this problem lies. Do you think they don’t know, or do you think they are protecting Dear Leader?
