Gulf Oil Leak Could Grow by 12 Times, Execs Tell Congress

By Lisa Lerer - May 04, 2010

Oil leaking from a BP Plc well in the Gulf of Mexico could increase as much as 12 times to 60,000 barrels a day if the company fails to stem the flow, Representative Edward Markey said after a briefing by industry executives. “The amount of oil per day could actually rise from 5,000 to 60,000 barrels,” Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, told reporters in Washington today. “Although in a worst-case scenario the most likely number was in a 40,000-barrel range.”

NEWT GINGRICH: We Can't Let Gulf Spill Put An End to American Offshore Drilling

By Newt Gingrich
- FOXNews.com

The answer to the crisis in the Gulf is not to move backward by halting new American offshore energy production.

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a tragic reminder that human progress is not without risk.
Offshore drilling is no exception. As I wrote in "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less in 2008:"
“the truth is that we can produce more American energy and do it responsibly.http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2010...-gulf-obama-energy-drill-cleanup-environment/

BP pins Gulf of Mexico oil clear-up hopes on funnel

John Curry, from BP, explains how the funnel should work

A giant iron funnel being built in a bid to halt the huge spill from a Gulf of Mexico well will be deployed to the seabed on Thursday, BP says. The 98-tonne, dome-topped box being built by steel workers will be connected to a drill ship and lowered to the sea floor.
BP has never deployed such a structure at a depth of 5,000ft (1,500m) and difficulties may occur, it says.

Market Update

11:00 am

Oil prices have been exceptionally weak in recent trade. Crude oil prices closed the prior session of pit trade with a 4% loss and recently extended their slide another 3.4% to $79.90 per barrel with the release of the latest weekly inventory data, which showed a build of 2.76 million barrels when a build of 1 million barrels had been widely expected. Article in WSJ asks- is it now the time to buy BP stock?

Since the oil rig exploded last month, these ADRs have crashed from about $61 to $51. That has wiped about $30 billion off the company's market value.
Is that reasonable? Does it adequately reflect the company's likely losses from this disaster? Is the stock now cheap?
Right now we don't know for sure how bad this crisis is going to get, or how much it is going to cost. We don't know how quickly they can cap the well, how much oil is going to gush out before they do, where that oil will end up and how much business or environmental damage it will do. The situation is changing hourly. What if the giant oil slick gets carried around the tip of Florida by the Gulf Stream? (And what happens, for example, if it washes ashore by Rush Limbaugh's house on Palm Beach, and even he turns on the oil companies?)
Trying to estimate a final bill at this point seems pretty fruitless....

In Wake of Oil Spill, BP Stock Looks Cheap

Negative, Negative, Negative
Let's think Positive
I'm positive this thing will cost much money, who will pay most of it, Not BP I'm positive!
Will it damage the environment Yes, I'm Positive.
Will it be as bad as everyone thinks? Not if they cap that thing Thursday!
Will it hurt the eastern Seaboard, I don't think so, think DILUTION, on that I'm not that Positive.;)

Smallest of three leaks capped on damaged oil well, BP exec says

corner_wire_BL.gif

Crews working to stem the tide of oil in the Gulf of Mexico capped one of the three leaking points Wednesday, a BP executive said.
John Curry, director of external affairs for BP, said the leak that was capped was the smallest of three. Curry said the pipe was cut off and sealed with a slip valve.
BP, which owns the damaged well, is responsible for the cleanup and costs of the massive oil spill.

The agency I worked for is a preservation agency. I still get work email. This morning the head office sent out an "all hands on deck" request for people who can go to the gulf to help with things like wetlands damage analysis and mitigation. They sounded pretty desperate for any and all help.

And the USA is just the place if you want to see Neighbors helping each other, GREAT PLACE the USA!!
Got to go open my Swimming Pool right now, anyone want to help me with the cover, it weighs about 200 Lbs?:D

Macondo Oil Capture Coffer Dam

The containment dome that will be placed over the Macondo well site to capture leaking crude oil departed Port Fourchon, La., late Wednesday afternoon.

Following the approximately 12-hour trip aboard the M/V Joe Griffin to the Deepwater Horizon site, the 125-ton cofferdam structure will be lowered approximately one mile to the sea floor where it will be placed atop the largest leak source. http://www.rigzone.com/news/article.asp?hpf=1&a_id=92865

Macondo Oil Slick (May 4)

(Dow Jones Newswires), May 5, 2010
Coast Guard Commandant Thad W. Allen said Wednesday he has alerted officials in Florida and Alabama that the states could be hit by oil from a damaged well under the Gulf of Mexico, but so far the slick is largely staying put offshore.
Cleanup crews are taking advantage of good weather to try to burn some of the oil on the surface on Wednesday. [more]
