Volatile and inconsistent — that’s the market this month.

TSP investors, both bulls and bears, are struggling to see through this market. Halfway through the month and it is the I and F-fund that have been the wealth drivers this month. Meanwhile, the C and S-fund are priced lower than they were at the end of September.

Oct Returns 16.jpg

Through October 16th, only three AutoTracker members have maneuvered a better return than the I-fund's 1.44% gain.

Mucho_Dinero leads the community with a well-timed entry into the S-fund. The moved from the G-fund to the S-fund on October 10th when the S-fund plungged over 3% in a single day. While some of those gains have since been trimmed, they still hold the top spot with a 2.16% return for the month.

Meanwhile, the average October return across the TSP Talk AutoTracker* is -0.06%.

The I-fund retraced some returns on Tuesday while the C and S-fund maintained their recent prices. That churned the October AutoTracker standings to put 10 members and the Premium Service Intrepid ahead of the I-fund's 1.54% October return.

A shared trait among this group is timing. Most were parked in the G-fund during the October 10 sell-off and have since rotated into stocks. Beyond that, their approaches diverge. Each of the three stock funds—C, S, and I—is represented among their allocations.

Six of the 11 are non-premium members. Here is their average allocation:

Average Allocation of the 6 non-Premium Members
G: 28.3% | F: 0.0% | C: 34.2% | S: 25.8% | I: 11.7%

The C-fund appears to be the favored fund, but diversification remains common—five of the six hold at least two stock funds.

We face the last week of this volatile October.

Nine AutoTracker members begin the week with a better return than the I-fund through the month.

After Friday's boost in stock prices, it is not surprising to see most of the top performing members fully invested in stock funds. This week they face the FOMC policy decision. Friday's CPI inflation data has the market fully expecting a rate cut on Wednesday. The question is whether the market has priced it in already.

Five of the 9 are non-premium members. Here is their average allocation:

Average Allocation of the 5 non-Premium Members
G: 0.0% | F: 0.0% | C: 46.0% | S: 40.0% | I: 14.0%
