Taxes Taxes, do you really think they will go DOWN?
McCain, Obama and your tax bill

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERSHere's how average tax bills could change in 2009 if the candidates' tax proposals were fully in effect.* An average decline doesn't mean everyone's bill in a given group would fall, nor does an average increase imply everyone's bill goes up.(http://i.cdn.turner.com/money/.element/img/2.0/buttons/circle_arrow.gif) no-repeat

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Tax breaks, tax breaks, tax breaks. For months now, Barack Obama and John McCain have promised voters that they will lessen the financial burden on Americans - even as the economic crisis worsens and the country racks up record deficits.
McCain, who wants to extend President Bush's tax cuts for everyone, says repeatedly that now would be the worst time to raise taxes.
"Raising taxes makes a bad economy much worse," McCain said on Tuesday."Keeping taxes low creates jobs, keeps money in your hands and strengthens our economy."
Obama, who would repeal some of the Bush tax cuts but only for the highest income taxpayers, says now more than ever the middle class needs help.
"If you make under $250,000, you will not see your taxes increase by a single dime - not your income taxes, not your payroll taxes, not your capital gains taxes, nothing," Obama said Tuesday. "Because the last thing we should do in this economy is raise taxes on the middle class."
Even before the financial meltdown, budget experts were expressing concerns about the cost of both candidates' tax proposals - which go well beyond just extending tax cuts enacted under Bush.
The nonpartisan Committee for a Federal Budget, excluding the tax-related parts of the candidates' health care proposals, estimates that McCain's tax plans could increase the federal deficit by over $400 billion annually by 2013 and Obama's could increase it by $360 billion.
On top of that, they have both called for additional temporary tax cuts to be put in place as part of any economic stimulus package that lawmakers might consider in the coming weeks or months to jolt the economy. [more]

How much do we spend on food?
Good info on this site:

Excerpt:
We tend to look back at Depression era prices and think how cheap everything was. But in 1938, when the minimum wage law was first enacted, the rate was 25 cents an hour. The worker who made that had to work 9 ¼ hours to pay for my shopping list. At the bottom of the ladder, people literally worked for food.
In 1961, the minimum wage was up to $1.15, and the market basket took only 3 ¾ hours.
Food prices stayed around that range for years, even through the 1970s. After a long hyperinflation, prices finally rose enough to cause a minimum wage worker to labor 5 ½ hours to buy food in 1981, when the minimum wage was $3.35. That was a spike. The prices dropped back to the 4-hour range after that. And by 1991, when the minimum, wage rose to $4.25, my market basket was right back to 4 hours of minimum wage time.
Despite bouts of inflation, farm embargos, oil shocks and other forces, we have never again paid as much for food as we did in the 1930s and World War II years.
That is, until now. The market basket now takes 5 ½ hours to earn—the highest grocery cost since 1950.
Maybe we should stop burning corn. [more] http://inflationdata.com/Inflation/Inflation_Articles/Wages_and_Food.asp

I'm with ya. Been doing it for years. I have not heard good things about Chantrx(sp). Seems to deposit the chemical directly in the brain to block out the receptors. No thanks. I've got enuff stuff in my head..no need to add more.:D Also heard it can cause depression. The last time I looked no one needs to be the cause of their own depression, I mean that there is already plenty we could be depressed about. Look around, pick one. I have also heard that the cigarette companies have been adding the same type of chemicals that target the pleasure centers in the brain, therefore making it even more addictive. They say practice makes perfect. So keep trying. When you are ready, you will stop.

Thanks for the info and the encouragement. Didn't know about the depression. Now that I think about it a friend used it to quit with good results, but had a serious panic attack, which is just not like him. He's always in control and is 6'6" tall. He's over it now and still doesn't smoke.
I just have to catch the flu before I try again, I guess?:D
