So my High School Buddy is a retired music educator....he lives in the mountains of Western Carolina. Every so often, he sends me a "CARE Package" of new, or maybe non-mainstream, music...he's trying to help me avoid sinking in to listening only to all the old classics that we grew up with... BTW...if you know what a "CARE Package" is, then you're probably in my generation...Anyway, so his latest shipment included this song...since we went through high school playing brass instruments, a lot of his stuff includes brass sections...FINE by me !!! Some of the stuff he sends is "Meh...", but this one hit close to home ! I was a little leery about the title, but if this doesn't make you feel good, and want to dance and hop around, acting stupid, then I feel kinda' sorry for you !!! Ironic that the band is out of CA...
Dustbowl Revival - "Lampshade On "Stoplight...
good one stoplight. what caught my eye was at about 2:55 minutes in, that couple where they lock arms and he twists her over his back. i have seen that before. at a western street dance live band drinking party wedding reception. whole town and half the country from the county there, some folks in for one of their 3 or 4 trips per year to town. big ole shindig well past midnight. in one of the remotest places in montana and probably conus, it is a white spot cell hole on the att&t/verizon map.there was this couple and they did that, and much more. he could flip and spin her around in ways you can't imagine, they never let go of each other's hands during all that twisting and stepping, sometimes moved through the crowd with smooth precision, sometimes folks would just clear the floor and let them go at it, crazy stuff. extreme timing and situational awareness of each other, the music, and folks around them. i can't imagine what must go on in their living room late at night to achieve that level of familiarity and trust and muscle memory and timing. it was like art. a thing of beauty. unreal, you could only stand there and stomp and watch and smile.
lampshade on. got it.
yep. care package.
socks and underwear. some beef jerky from local favorite place. a handwritten note from a loved one. $20 bill hidden in one of the socks. homemade oatmeal raisin cookies, maybe stale by the time they arrived but still good. mmm, mmmm.
they used to have care packages before amazon got invented. thanks a lot jeff bezos, killed a whole generation of love.
i used to work on boats in alaska, for weeks and sometimes months out of port. once in a while a private boat coming out that way would pick stuff up for us, but usually had to wait until get back to town. my mom would never send me "protection". there are no "normal women" these days.anyways, here's to care packages. maybe we can sip some rye some day.Burro,Don't forget the toilet paper, chewing gum, and ...ummmm...."sexual protection"...didn't have the carry-over from WWII...panty hose !!! Show me a normal Woman who wears panty hose nowadays...Oh, wait....that's what was included in my C-rats, back in the 70's ! My Nephew was in the USAF in the 90's...he said they received "MRE's"...."Meals Refused by Ethiopians" !
Now THAT'S a pretty bad indictment...Screw it...I'm gonna go put my lampshade on, too...Stoplight...

Stoplight...
Really great, stoplight. I never would have thought of brass in a bluegrass band, but it works! it works!I love western swing, was pretty good at it back in my day, out of practice now. I knew a competition swing dancer in grad school, he did all the moves noted in the conversation, I think I danced with him once and he did a couple of the milder attention-getter. Having a regular swing dance partner, which I did in an earlier life, you get pretty smooth at the moves you are both comfortable with. I loved it, still miss it. dancing to western, bluegrass or oldtime fiddle music, any of the above, is the bomb. a natural high.
I remember college friends getting care packages, both my parents went to a local college, lived at home-I don't think either of them ever knew about care packages, so I never got any. but then it never occurred to me to ask for one either. so that one's on me.
