Hello: I have been unable to find an answer to this question. I would like to transfer some of my funds into a self directed IRA without penalty for the purpose of buying physical (non cash assets). Thanks in advance.

Meteorology, Unless you are separated from service you cannot do a partial or full withdrawal from your TSP account. The only thing you could do would be to take a loan out against your TSP account. However, you would have to pay that back before you retire. There is interest on the loan and if not paid back before retiring then you will be taxed on the outstanding balance and interest.

NASA. I had a feeling that would be the case. Thanks. I expect to still be working past 59 1/2 so hopefully I will have some more options when I turn that age. I just am uncomfortable having so large a percentage tied to the US dollar. I have trimmed back contributions to 5 % last year with the goal of diverting additional to non cash assets.

After doing some further looking TSP allows for a one time aged based withdrawal from the TSP if age 59.5 or older while in service. IRA rollover is permitted without tax implications. One can also withdraw funds (once only) with no questions asked at the same age while still in service, but it is taxable if not being rolled into an IRA.
