Base salaries for Newport Beach lifeguards range from $58,000 for the lowest-paid officer to $108,492 for the top-paid battalion chief, according to a 2010 city report on lifeguard pay. Adding in overtime, special compensation, pension, medical benefits, life insurance and other pay, two battalion chiefs cleared more than $200,000 in 2010, while the lowest-paid officer made more than $98,000.

All lifeguards received $400 in sunscreen allowance and two cleared $28,000 apiece in overtime and night duty pay.

Newport Beach’s lifeguards can also retire at 50 with 90 per cent of their salary with 30 years of service, according to state data.

Tell me about it! This is a database that allows you to look up CA state worker's salaries. Check out the "Forestry and Fire Protection" group. For example, if you see a "Fire Captain" who has made $180,000 plus, each of the last 3 years, that is the equivalent to a GS-7 in the federal work force. To rub salt in the wound, federal equivs to CalFire "Fire Captains" often find themselves working side by side with them in mutual aid situations. If that weren't enough, the California state firefighters union requires them to get motels (ie showers, quiet, real beds, tv) while the federal firefighters sleep on the ground with generators humming, bright lights and who knows what other elements. I could say more, but....

Plus I'm fairly sure with these firefighters, this includes overtime, so their base salary would be lower, but they are paid portal to portal on wild land fires, so a lot of that is earned while sleeping. The kicker is, their high 3 includes the overtime!

Lifeguards making six figure salaries..?

Nah. Never would happen.

'Cepting of course if David Hasselhoff was involved-
