jumping in with both feet, why not, got 20+ years to make this work. Young guys i work with are not interested in retirement and blow it off. big mistake i think. when you are 59, its a little late to start. I look forward to hearing from those of you with more knowledge than i have. thanks in advance, and many happy returns:)

Welcome from a fellow newb (for this site anyway)! I've only been here a couple of weeks, and already wish I had found this site years ago! Lots of great stuff in here. Good luck!

Welcome. You're smart to start investing while you're young. I've nearly doubled my TSP account balance since actively controlling it for the last three years. I had a poorly distributed buy and hold strategy for my first twelve years of service. I can only imagine how much more I'd have if I had known what I was doing back then.

Then again, my success is largely luck, given my method is to drink some Jack Daniels, throw darts at a board with the funds in place of points, and then watch the market. I either drink more Jack Daniels in celebration, or to dull the pain!:D I've been celebrating a lot this year, but I may need a shot or two today to calm my nerves.:worried:

Your mileage may vary. Good luck.

after watching the tsp for a year, i notice the I fund looks very volitile. Large swings all the time. any advice? I am thinking about sticking more to C and S....is that possibly a mistake?:suspicious:

It comes down to how much risk you are willing to take.

You can never make a mistake buying into the C fund - the I fund is also a large cap fund. I like the I fund as a proxy move with a weak euro into the emerging markets with their exports. Always keep your money working by never shutting off you dollar cost averaging - especially in markets like we are currently experiencing - you need to accumulate as many cheap shares as you financial situation allows.

Just a suggestion. Change the name if this thread to "silversurfer" from "just getting started". A little more personal. :)

Welcome Silversurfer and good luck. You are lightyears ahead of your co-workers if you are planning your nest egg now, long before you get close. Time is the one thing that nothing can replace. Good job.

Well, SilverSurfer, welcome to the Top Ten in the Autotracker. Not bad for someone who has only been in the tracker since October 5th and, according to my spreadsheet, has pretty much called both major moves to the day since then...

What's your secret?
