There are over 900 of these pets....
The Joplin Shelter has added two buildings to house the dogs; this weekend is Free-adopt-a-pet;
You don't have to be a Missourian to do so. There are a variety of reasons why the dogs aren't claimed, including their owners have no place themselves. Their hearts must really be hurting knowing they have to let their pet go - without a goodby... :worried:

Neighbors Lend a Hand to Flood-Ravaged North Dakota Town

Similar stories of people helping each other, often without being asked and demanding nothing in return, were a heartwarming counterpoint to the destruction from unprecedented flooding along the Souris valley in north-central North Dakota.

Patrica Eide of Tioga, about 85 miles west, posted an offer to loan her 30-foot camper to a displaced family. It quickly drew a taker: a man with a wife and three children who were living in their van since being evacuated.
"We could probably rent that thing for $500 a month, but I told my husband there's no way I'm going to be greedy," Eide, 62, said by phone. "God just had better plans for our camper than renting it." She was preparing to haul it to Minot with a load of canned tomatoes and green beans, a grill, propane and other supplies. "I think we've got `em covered," she said.

So many opened their doors that while some 11,000 people were evacuated from neighborhoods nearest the river, only a few hundred used shelters at Minot State University and the City Auditorium.

In a town of 40k, they absorb and assist 1/4 of their community with little fanfare or fuss, amidst their own personal tragedies. This is one for the ages, literally. 80 yr olds who've made their life in the dirt and still kicking say they have never seen anything like it. Massive snow long cold winter double the norm, wet wet spring already exceeding annual averages, basins are full, snow pack in the mountains still largely pending, on soil not built to take that much. Look out missouri river and below, it's coming.

This is where you bread comes from.

Yes. I wonder if I'll get in and out of St. Louis before the dams break. flying into St. Louis next week, be in the area for 1/5 weeks before flying out-risk is huge, but the plane ticket was bought before they started talking about St. Louis going 6feet under if dams start busting-chain reaction. family matters-better I go now than later this summer-risk just only gets worse the longer I wait to go-unless I eat the price of the ticket and wait til fall now. have a week still to decide. 105 year old grandmother may not be able to wait tho. She's on high ground at least. I think. couple hours away on east side of the Miss.
