I have a phone interview thursday!

Congratulations!
Thanks.

Skooby,
Do you currently live in Indy?
Depends on what your hobbies are. From FB you can be at some realy cool places in a couple of hours. Beaches to Mountains.
Yes...I currently live in Indy. I'm kind of a home body actually but I do get out from time to time. My hobbies...I can be open to anything.

Skooby, Congratulations. My sister-in-law used to live in Holly Springs, just a bit northeast. That whole area is pretty nice. Hope you like NASCAR.

I'll have to check out Holly Springs. I looked at google maps...it's an hour away. I don't mind commuting though if the area is nice. I like drag racing...i'm going to miss not going to Pacer and Colt games though. I might have to go to Charlotte every now and then for that.

Thanks all for the help. I received a tenative job offer yesterday! I am now awaiting to pass security clearance.

I'm a civilian, never military. Have any of you lived in the Fort Bragg area? The near city (Fayetteville) has been referred to at Fayettenam. Yikes!

I've done some research on the area already but...would like to get thoughts from those that actually lived in the area before.

Thanks for all the help. I stumbled on the first question...the most basic and obvious one: "Tell us about yourself". I did well on the work related questions though.
Yourself: The hardest thing to discuss. But once you get going, it's hard stopping. In the Air Force, most PME (professional Military Education) courses, stressed coming up with a 2-3 minute bio that can go into any conversation. Now, since the average person can speak (intelligently and clearly) about 150 words per minute, you can see the possibilities of having 300-450 words ready to describe yourself. Even though you are done with this interview, remember there will be more and sometimes one doesn't have the luxury of a phone interview....So be prepared.

I hope you get the job if it is what you want!

I recently interviewed for a new position – This is what helped me - Go to Google and ask “How to prepare for an interview”. Tons of information - Choose a web site that provides the 20 most popular interview questions. Answer these questions thoroughly. During my interview, every question from the panel was similar to the Google questions. Also, be prepared to ask the interviewers questions at the end. Good luck to you!

Time management

In every interview I've been in..there is an element so many screw up on..and that's time..if they tell you you will have 10 minutes to answer each question or you'll have 30 minute for the entire interview, etc...use every minute wisely and stay on time..too short they'll gig you, too long they'll gig you..ask for any part of any question to be repeated and write it down as they ask, so you will be able to stay focused on the points of the question....

good luck!

Finally, go back over the position announcement and KSA related questions...that's your study sheet. Prepare for questions that expand on the basic principles covered in those questions!

Again, relax and congratulate yourself on getting to the interview, getting that far is the most important step!

I can't emphasize these great points by Mapper any better. Now, you got a foot in the door for a reason. You qualify for the position. Now explain why! Answer questions with examples of how you have done it in the past, directly or indirectly.

Good Luck and remember to ask questions as well, because ultimately, they are in control of your interview, let them feel they are in control. Let them shed light on all the aspects of the job NOT listed in the announcement.

Peace!

Do it where you are most comfortable, probably best from home. Set yourself up the way you are most comfortable and relaxed. I do phone interviews in my PJs with a cup of coffee and water nearby...that may not work for you, but it helps me be as relaxed as possible. I do set up at a desk so feel engaged in the "work" I'm conducting. I love this aspect of phone interviews.

Write down some questions you have about the job in advance of the interview, I usually ask my questions at the end (be it logistics, work duties, ?s about the ideal person the employer is looking for). Remember you may be moving for this job so it's nearly as important for you to interview your potential colleagues as it is for them to interview you.

If you want the job, tell them as much and tell them why you want it.

Very important, keep paper and pen nearby to take notes. If you don't completely comprehend the question don't be afraid to ask them to elaborate.

Use a land line if you can, call quality is better and you don't want this call to get dropped!! When the interview starts ask them for a number to call in case your line goes bad for any unknown reason.

To help with your nerves, remember that you are the best expert on YOU your skills and your own career goals. If you're honest about what you know and what skills you can bring to the table you shouldn't be nervous. Don't expect to know everything about the job, everyone has something to learn as they move up positions. They already found something they liked on your application so you're past the most difficult step. They are interviewing you to see if you are a good fit for the position, don't take it personally if you aren't the best fit.

Finally, go back over the position announcement and KSA related questions...that's your study sheet. Prepare for questions that expand on the basic principles covered in those questions!

Again, relax and congratulate yourself on getting to the interview, getting that far is the most important step!

Re: I have a phone interview Thursday!

All I can say is have all of your information at hand, make sure to mention as many things that are required by the Position Description that you can and be prepared to explain how you meet the requirements you're a self starter mentions some of your accomplishments, awards. Yes blow your own horn make light joke a little but not much. Mention how excited you are to have an opportunity to possibly work for their organization and explain why, that may take a little studying, do some research on their Org. I'm sure others can add to this things have changed but they remain the same.
Best of luck Skooby!:D

Good luck, Skooby!

Act confidently, but not cocky. Assuming you are qualified, try to make it feel like they are trying to get you for the job, rather than you needing the job. (i.e. Why should you take the job if offered?)

Give succinct answers - don't ramble. Let them do a lot of the talking. People like people who listen.

The position is in another state. It's a GS 7/9.

I've never been on an interview before (in person or on the phone).

Please give any advice. It's two days away and i'm already nervous.

It's during lunch time. They gave me the number to call (I received the call at my work phone). I was thinking about taking off of work and calling them from home instead of my job since i'll be comfortable there. What do you all think?
