TOKYO, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei average fell 0.2 percent on Monday, the last full trading day of the year, after the previous week's gains, though insurer shares were seen higher on news about a possible large merger in the sector.
The benchmark Nikkei .N225 edged 13.21 points lower to 8,726.31. It rose 1.6 percent on Friday to hit its highest close in six weeks, while it added 1.8 percent on the week.The broader Topix was flat at 846.93.

The Tokyo bourse will end the year with a half day of trading on Tuesday and reopen on Jan. 5.
