Hurricane Sandy

Ive heard conflicting reports, is the stock market open tomorrow or not?? I would think it would be closed with all of this going on...

New York Stock Exchange plans to open Monday despite storm threat
The New York Stock Exchange said it plans to open for trading Monday despite the threat of disruptions as Hurricane Sandy barrels toward the East Coast.
NYSE Euronext said it is "monitoring the advance of Hurricane Sandy and preparations are in place for our U.S. markets to operate normally on Monday."

A spokesman for the Nasdaq Stock Market couldn't be immediately reached.

New York's major airports were preparing to shut down late Sunday and airlines were canceling hundreds of flights in and out of the area. New York officials were also ordering evacuations in some low-lying areas, including the city's financial district.

The major stock exchanges rarely close for trading. The NYSE shut down for Hurricane Gloria in 1985 and trading was closed for four days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

Re: Intrepid Timer's ETF Strategies: HURRICANE SANDY...

Just picked this up off facebook a few minutes ago.

Battery tide level 12 feet

... Lower Manhattan has no power because transformers have exploded by the Fulton and Bowling Green network.
Rockaway beach and Rockaway Park have 8 feet of water. Many people in this area did not leave. Rescues are not possible.
Long Beach LI is under water.
Sandy hook is under water.
Jersey city and Hoboken waterside streets are flooding.
All of the Zone A areas of NYC are flooding.
ALL TIME record in the Battery and we are not at high tide.
Will give more info as I get it.
Pray for us.

Not looking good.

12 feet of water at Battery Park, and it's still rising.

This photo from Weather Underground just now- from Manhatten

The Department of Defense continues to be an active partner in the response to Hurricane Sandy by providing FEMA and governors with capable, trained and accessible forces and equipment when requested. Here is tonight's update:
- As of 5:30 p.m. tonight, there are approximately 6,700 National Guard forces on state active duty or in the process of activating for duty in support of the governors of NY, MA, VA, NJ, DE, CT and MD. These forces are providing assistance to local first responders and FEMA with critical tasks such and assistance at evacuation shelters, rout clearance, search and rescue and delivery of essential equipment and supplies.
More than 61,100 National Guard members are available to assist civilian authorities in potentially affected states in support of relief efforts. Available National Guard resources include almost 140 rotary-winged aircraft to perform search and rescue, reconnaissance and personnel or cargo-carrying missions.
More information about DoD support to first responders can be seen here:
United States Department of Defense (defense.gov)
The National Guard - Hurricane Season 2012 operations
U.S. Northern Command
- The Secretary of Defense has authorized the following officers to serve as Dual Status Commanders:
NJ: Brig. Gen. James Grant, ARNG
NH: Brig. Gen. Carolyn Protzmann, ANG
MA: Brig. Gen. Paul Smith, ARNG
NY: Brig. Gen. Michael Swezy, ARNG
MD: Brig. Gen. Timothy Gowen, ANG
RI: Brig. Gen. Mark Jannitto, ANG
- U.S. Northern Command has identified active duty deputies to deploy in support of any designated Dual Status Commanders (DSC), and is currently working with officials from Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. These active duty deputies facilitate active duty force employment under DSC leadership should active duty assets be required.
- The Department of Defense activated Defense Coordinating Officers/Defense Coordinating Elements to support FEMA Regions I, II, and III. DCO/E from Regions VI, VII, and IX are providing additional surge support to Regions I, II, and III.
- U.S. Northern Command has placed the following DSCA forces on 24-hour Prepare to Deploy Order status in response to anticipated FEMA requests to mitigate or respond to effects of Hurricane Sandy: light/medium lift helicopters; medium/heavy lift helicopters; para-rescue teams; Information Awareness & Assessment aircraft; Tactical Common Data Link; Rover video receiver systems; and fixed-wing aircraft.
- U.S. Northern Command is deploying Joint Regional Medical Planners to the impacted FEMA Regions.
- FEMA has requested the use of Westover Air Reserve Base, MA., Joint Base McGuire/Dix/Lakehurst, NJ, and Dover AFB, DE, as Incident Support Bases for staging Federal support equipment and supplies. Ft. Devens, MA, has been designated a Federal Team Staging Facility.
- AFNORTH's National Security Emergency Preparedness directorate deployed emergency preparedness liaison officers to assist civil authorities in preparing for relief efforts.
- AFNORTH officials deployed Joint Air Component Coordination Elements in response to Hurricane Sandy. The AFNORTH JACCE teams deployed to Philadelphia, Boston, and Trenton, N.J. to support Hurricane Sandy relief preparation efforts. JACCE members are Air Force subject matter experts who serve to coordinate Air Force assets to assist wherever needed during times of crisis.
- U.S. Northern Command's Joint Personnel Recovery Center (JPRC), in support of AFNORTH's Joint Force Air Component Commander (JFACC), is prepositioning search and rescue forces for possible Hurricane Sandy activities. The JPRC is one of several resources the JFACC employs in its Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) role. The JPRC has the capability to conduct large-scale search and rescue (SAR) operations during contingencies such as hurricanes or other natural or man-made disasters, making the JPRC a valuable asset to the DSCA mission.
- All DoD installations have been directed to offer support to local community requests for assistance, to include providing staging and bed-down for utility recovery teams assigned to restore power.
- The following installations have relocated aircraft in advance of Hurricane Sandy:

Re: Intrepid Timer's ETF Strategies: HURRICANE SANDY...

Just reported THREE FOOT of WATER on the floor of the Stock Exchange!

Re: Intrepid Timer's ETF Strategies: HURRICANE SANDY...

The water peaked at Battery Park at 13.88 feet above flood stage, and that was a new record- and about eight feet of water in parts of lower Manhattan. It now has started to recede.

Let's hope no one died- but it is going to be a MESS for a long time in downtown NEW YORK.

Subways are FLOODED OUT. Battery Park Tunnel to New Jersey is FLOODED OUT.

Floodwaters rushed through Lower Manhattan on Monday night, inundating some tunnels and likely leaving New York City’s mass-transit system hampered for days. No clear estimate was available, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority did not provide a timetable for reopening the subways. But the extent of flooding and the height of the storm surge appeared likely to meet or exceed the level of a 1992 nor’easter that forced the temporary closure of subway tunnels for both the MTA and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

“There’s been an enormous surge that’s come up, some streets two and three feet under water,” MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota said in a telephone interview after a tour of Lower Manhattan. Water is “flowing at great speed” from the West Side Highway into the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, he said, but it’s too early to say how much — if any — has entered the subway system.

A previous statement from the MTA that four feet of water had entered the subway tunnels in fact referred to water pooled inside a subway station, a spokesman said.
