Frixxxx,

Thank you for the gratitude. It was my honor and pleasure to serve this great country of ours!

Thanks to all for the warm welcomes! I intend to read every thread on the forum. I am ashamed to say I don't know anything about TSP or the difference between a Bull or Bear Market.

Are there any recommended outside readings such as "TSP for Dummies" floating around?

Looking forward to learning and contributing!

Best Wishes!

Here is always a good thread I recommend for those just starting to think about TSP, and how to invest:

http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/showthread.php?t=3629

It's a pretty good read for those who aren't really versed yet and just want some basic places to start.

After that thread- you can find much more here. It just takes time.

Welcome, and thanks for your service!

Nice advice for a rookie......

Welcome vbrabble,

You are in a unique position and should reap the highest rewards possible.

Max 401K if you need tax deferred income, max IRA if you need more. Use Roth's to put away even more money or just buy stock and trade.

I suggest looking at the threads here and looking strategies of other people. You can alos look at the Autotracker to see how people are moving their money and how well it is performing.

Then you will have a good start to be a wonderful member on the board....

Welcome again!

P.S. Thank you for your service with the Navy! Your patriotism is respected here!

Welcome - the first thing I'd recommend to you is to invest in a nice pair of sticky pants to help control any emotions you may experience - like fear and panic. The sticky pants will help you hold your positions preventing the jumping bean strategy. You can buy a nice stylish pair from True Religion Apparel for around $340 - pun intended.

I started with DHS last fall and enrolled in TSP when I started. I retired from the USN last year after 23 years, but I didn't contribute then because I didn't think I would have enough time to make it worth my while. Man! Was I really misguided and uninformed. But it is never too late.

I want to learn how to be aggressive and effective. I'm 41 years-old and I believe can hang in another 20 years in front of me with DHS (unless I can retire around 55).

I welcome any newbie/beginner advice.

Best Wishes!

Hello and welcome vbrabble!,

For starter's I would invest (if you can) the maximum amount that TSP allows. I believe it is $16,500.00

Your still young enough and have enough year's ahead of you that you can have a very decent retirement.

I don't have allot of time to write this right now but definitely read, read, read everything you can in this forum. You found the right place because most of this forum is geared to the TSP.

I'm sure a bunch more people will chime in.

Good Luck and Welcome !:)
