Global stocks struggle for direction as investors look to US data

Global stocks struggled for momentum on Friday as investors await the release of US employment figures that will offer a glimpse into the state of the world’s biggest economy in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. In trading in the Asia-Pacific region, Japan’s benchmark Topix index rose 0.3 per cent, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.1 per cent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 0.2 per cent. China’s CSI 300 index of Shanghai- and Shenzhen-listed stocks slipped 0.2 per cent. Stock markets have rallied strongly in recent weeks on hopes of a rebound in global economic activity following the Covid-19 pandemic.
