Get Rid of the "Crap" on Your PC

But all the freakin updates...

I agree ! SP3 for XP, IE7 etc...etc...

Spybot 1.3, Adware Pro and a good Antivirus/Firewall Program
should take care of those nasty internet porn add-ins (oops).
I don't use FireFox, but it appears that Malyla's got the goods
on the Alternative Internet Browser. ;)

Thanks everyone for your valuable input on Firefox! I downloaded and installed it yesterday and it is much faster and cleaner than IE. Also, my son recommended downloading the Windows Defender program from the Microsoft site. Helps ID hangups like too many programs which boot at startup. Adaware's new Anniversery version is available and a good bit faster than previous versions (and free:). May avoid having to reinstall Windows for awhile longer.

OK - to clear your browser history go into Tools, Options, Privacy, Private Data Settings and check that info you want to clear. Then click clear private data now.

Thanks..I tried that..like I said, I tried every combination and when I go back to this drop down of the address browser bar all this stuff is still there..

In your first post, the image of your options settings shows that you checked the box to keep your history for at least 1 day. Further down in the Private Data section, the box is unchecked for clearing private data when closing Foxfire. With these settings, your browser is doing exactly what you set it to do. I would un-check the top box and then, check the bottom one under Private Data, and then close all browser windows. Then reopen the browser and see if the history drop-down looks any different. But that's just me... and just a friendly suggestion.:)

The rest of the history are your favorites ( The gold star next to the webpage name indicates that). You will now need to remove or modify your favorites. Mozilla will put your favorites in the history bar under the assumption that you go to those the most. But, the default setting may have webpages you do not consider favorites, so modify your favorite selections and then clear your history again. I hope this helps.

Thanks you all...Blarney, Bud, and Malyla..I will try all of your suggestions..But I think Malyla is right on..those are in my fovorites, imported from the IE favorite list.

One more question..once I bookmarked (favorite) a site..I was able to in IE right click and "send To" desktop for a short cut..with Mozzola I can't seem to be able to do this..any suggestions here?

mucho grassyass:):D

Firefox Users, After installing and using Firefox I noticed that for some of my emails with attachments (Outlook Express) the attachments will not open now. If you click on them it identifies the attachment as containing a virus. Is there a fix for this problem?

:toung: Well, I figured out how to get "Crap" working ON my PC tonight! Bought my compute year and 1/2 ago, with DVD-R and DVD-RW drives both, but only had 1 DVD to test on it til today and that one wouldn't play in Windows Media Player unless I bought some joe-blow little extra program to "decode" the video. The DVD wasn't that important so I just didn't bother, more out of irritation. You'd think that having a new PC put together for you with Windows XP and MS Word Office on it, the darn thing would at least play a basic DVD, but Noooooo!

But today I bought a DVD worth the time and aggravation to buy the extra stoopid little add-on compatibility software (that DVD also wouldn't play for me with basic XP/WMP configuration :notrust:). and of course once I paid my money and downloaded the silly thing, I could see the video part finally, but the audio part was AWOL!

So then I had to go into miscellaneous tech-geekie QandA sites to find out why and what to do about it. Found aNOTHer little freebie open-source program that was supposed to make the audio work. So I downloaded THAT! And of course, I had to fuss and finagle and throw things in frustration before I found the right little trial and error setting that finally turned the sound on to go with the video. WHAT a HASSle! But-I finally conquered WinXP and WinMedPlayer today. Think it took me at least as long as figuring out my taxes this year, and at least as much aggravation too, but I did it-finally! Whew! :o

You think that was hard, then don't upgrade to VISTA Premium 64! BAAAAH!!!!!!

Hello Board Computer Gurus, My wife and I are in the market for a new computer. Any suggestions for a good value? I like Dell but they're a little pricy. I have a Compaq/HP at work which is decent. We don't play games, etc. mainly just Internet and email. The old one still works but is pretty slow (8 years old). We do work from home some. Also, thoughts on Windows 7? Am thinking about getting the Professional version to use Office XP more easily as I understand the Home version of Windows 7 doesn't play well with Office XP. Thanks for your advice!

As far as a recommendation for a computer computer Dell and HP are about the same. At the USAF Base where I work they offer computer software for home use at a cut price. We can get Symantec Antivirus (Norton) and others FREE. they also offer Microsoft Office Pro, you just pay shipping $21, now that's a deal. The new version should work fine with Windows 7.
If you work for DOD check the Base home Page for:
Software for Home Use

Microsoft Home Use Program (HUP)

As part of a new offering from Microsoft, you are eligible to participate in the Home Use Program (HUP). This program enables you to get a licensed copy of some Microsoft Office desktop applications to install and use on your home computer. The current cost for shipping and handling within the United States is $21.95. Contractors are eligible to purchase software.

The following licenses are now available under the HUP:
- Office Enterprise Edition 2007
- Project Standard 2007
- Visio Professional 2007
- SharePoint Designer 2007

You are eligible to order Office 2007, although, you already ordered an earlier copy of Office Pro 2003.

For each product eligible for the Home Use Program for which you are a licensed user with active Software Assurance coverage, you may order a single copy of that product to install and use on a home computer. You may continue using this HUP software while you are under our employment and as long as the software
you use at work has active Software Assurance coverage. To access the Microsoft Home Use Program
web site, please follow the steps below:
