stupid question: why didn't you just rent the family a hotel room in the casino for free tonight?

obvious answer: i can't afford it without jeapordizing my own comfort.

that is exactly why our government is broke and shutdown right now.

That works til it doesn't. Encountered a young woman with young children sitting on curb in a vacant lot across from the groc store the other night. cold drizzle coming down, dark coming, no raingear on her or the kids, just cotton sweatshirts, hypothermia weather. Had totalled her car over in the next town. holding a sign saying please help.

asked if she had place to stay, she said they were currently in a tent behind the local tribal casino, that social services was trying to get her and the kids into a house, that her son, 8-10yo by looks of him, went to school here in our town. offered her a ride back to their tent (10 miles from the groc store), they were finishing small bowls of soup from the deli while sitting there on the curb.

she said her daughter was somewhere, she had to wait for the daughter to return. meanwhile she and the 10yo sitting on the curb with a sign asking for help, a much younger child sitting 20 feet away silently huddled under a shade tree, no rain gear, cold drizzle, dark coming. I gave her a bit of cash from my wallet, hope she and the kids caught a ride back to their tent before hypothermia set in. hope they get in better shelter soon.

forgive me, b. It was in my mind to offer, which is why I asked in the first place. until she said they had a tent. when she said that, I got the idea they weren't looking for that particular kind of help that night. I was probably mistaken.

as long as you keep the car payments current you can always park it in a nice neighborhood at night and dream.

You sound like the biggest jerk I have ever met in my life. I hope you are joking. There is NOTHING funny about people being furloughed. Kick me off if you want, then I won't have to read your crap anymore.

when the gov pulls its head out and decides to order me back to work i hope it's not on a thursday because i have other plans for tomorrow.

I'm not furloughed - I'm an "excepted employee". I don't know when I'll get paid for these days I'm working though. One can only assume it will be after the Republicans and Democrats come to a glorious concord.

I caught all the fish in the Back Bay yesterday and hit the end of the internet last night... I'm ready to go back to work.

Bored as all hell...
Actually, doing GIS homework...
That tells you something, it really does...

i am reminded of the generosity of human nature today, from all walks of life. sure there has been the friendly jokes at the gas station and the grocery store the last few days 'so how you enjoying your vacation'? and despite my protests they insist i should be back-paid for work i didn't do because it's not my fault, and these are mostly folks who detest gov oversight and intervention.

i'm at the grocery this morning for cheese and sauce and tortillas to make chicken enchiladas out of the half a bird i have left over from yesterday for dinner and they are out of flour tortillas, just two raggedy packs of small corn ones. when i ask if they have any flour ones the owner comes out of the back and says not until tuesday but i have an unopened pack at home, i'll call my wife, stop by on your way home. so i go to the checkout with my basket and to turn in my slip for the case lot sale, $250 of canned goods like stewed tomatoes and tuna and chicken and corn and green beans, and he just nods to the cashier write it down, it's all on sale anyway, it'll be here next week, pay me when you can. i walk out of there without writing a check.

his wife loads me up with two bags full of garden tomatoes and jalepenos and bell peppers and onions and cucumbers, and the tortillas. and i don't feel a bit bad about it because i've hauled trees or mowed lawns or changed tires for my share of folks when they needed it, and will continue to do so. that is what a well fare state is all about. it takes a village, but you won't find that in any gov gaurantee.

Got my marching orders through official channels today. "DO NOT RETURN TO WORK MONDAY", "You do not contribute to the welfare or moral of the DoD".

Hey, enjoy it. You are going to get paid. I did not get furloughed - been working the whole time.

Looks like you got the makings of a great salsa. Can you send me some?:D

i am so not worried about this furlough thing anymore. a quick check of the ups website shows the world has not stopped turning. the tracking number says my month's worth of mre's were in the town 30 miles away at 3:00 am this morning but are 'out for delivery' now. oh goody, that gal with the cute brown shorts is going to visit me today!

that plus the case lot goods from the grocery store next week and deer season is soon open means i'm in the berries. i can eat for at least 4 months. sure, there's bills due and stuff. but eventually if i don't work out arrangements to pay then they still have to come claim it, you got to catch me if you want me to hang. besides, almost nobody hardly ever ventures out this far and i'm a good shot. (vlm, wear brown shorts or remember the hand signal, salsa's on).

Excepted from Furlough:
DoD employees originally subject to, but excepted from, the shutdown furlough will receive their regular pay and allowances on time via the authority and appropriation in the “Pay Our Military Act” (POMA). These employees will receive a normal paycheck for the pay period that includes October 1-5. These employees may now also take annual and sick leave; normal Federal holiday rules apply for Columbus Day.

Employees Recalled under POMA:
DoD employees furloughed on October 1, 2013, then recalled to work based on the POMA, effective October 6, 2013, will receive their regular pay and allowances through September 30, as they were affected by the lapse in appropriation and were furloughed from October 1-5. They will receive their regular pay and allowances for subsequent pay periods via the authority and appropriation in POMA. Until and unless Congress passes legislation to restore their pay and allowances for October 1-5, AND there is a 2014 appropriation for the Department, these employees will not receive pay or allowances for the days upon which they were furloughed. These employees will be paid for the time they spent conducting orderly shutdown activities on October 1, but they will not receive that pay until there is a 2014 appropriation for the Department by which they may be paid. Employees recalled under POMA may take annual and sick leave; normal Federal holiday rules apply for Columbus Day. Furlough affects leave accrual. Most employees already have taken six furlough days (48 hours); when they reach a total of 10 furlough days or 80 hours (on/about 4 October), they will lose the sick and annual leave they would have earned for the pay period. Once an employee reaches 80 hours of non-pay time during a calendar year, no leave is accrued during the pay period that threshold is reached. A new 80-hour threshold begins the following pay period, and employees will again lose leave in each pay period in which the employee reaches 80 hours in a non-pay status. If Congress restores pay to furloughed employees, any lost leave will also be restored.
