Extended Warranties?

I haven't bought a car in a long time, and boy have they gotten expensive.

What's your thoughts getting an extended warranty? Obviously dealers will bilk you and even if you can negotiate them down dramatically, they are overpriced.

Any good third party warranty companies, or should we take our chances and pass? I heard something like 55% of warrantees are never used.

Personally I'd pass.
They seem just like insurance companies who want to sell you policies but try to pay the minimum if you ever file a claim.
If they're advertising on TV it must be very profitable...for them! ;)
(Like all those reverse mortgage and Medicare commercials.
they're spending big money on TV ads to MAKE money not lose it.)
Caveat Emptor!!
I have a 2001 Camry, 180K miles and have spent a total of 2K in repairs, honest!, not wear and tear items
like tires and oil changes but things that actually broke.
Been driving it since 2007. 🚗
So far so good! :D

Ha, that's a loaded question, it depends on what you're going to buy.

Every Toyota I've had, I ran into the dirt. Every Ford I've had, all the small stuff broke early.

I currently have a 2018 Honda Civic with <40K miles and already had to replace the AC compressor. The larger issue, will the extended warranty cover what breaks?

We just bought a Ford Explorer, along with an extended warranty. I would recommend that you search the internet for dealers selling the companies warranty. I did that, AFTER, buying the warranty from the dealer we bought the vehicle from and found out I could buy the warranty for about half of what we were charged.

With all of the electronics, tech, on vehicles, it's worth the peace of mind.

I also would not buy a 3rd party warranty.

I bought a jeep in 2009 with a free lifetime powertrain warranty. I’m on year 15 and have used the warranty only once for a leaking oil pan gasket.

A friend bought a jeep one year later and they offered the same warranty to him, but it cost $1000 extra.

The warranty is the only reason I’m running the mileage up on mine and keeping it so long (10 more years and I can get an antique tag). I guess it’s like when you carry an umbrella, it never seems to rain much?

I have a 2013 Ford F-150 crew cab. After the original warranty I purchased an extended warranty. The dealership has a hassle every time something hiccups, but it has paid for itself. I have power running boards and the motors have been replaced twice, my backup camera and the driver's side power mirror have been replaced.
