Dow's wild Friday trade threatens biggest stock-market reversal in 2 months as indexes give up early gains

U.S. stock relinquished nearly all of their gains from the open Friday, as as a rebound after the worst one-day decline since mid-March appeared shaky. The Dow Jones Industrial Average [: DJIA] was trading up 75 points, or 0.3%, at 25,188, but had been down by nearly 50 points at 25,078.41. The S&P 500 index was trading down 0.2% at 2,997, but had slipped down to a nadir at 2,985, while the Nasdaq Composite Index was off 0.4% at 9,455, after hitting a peak at 9,769, earlier in Friday action. If the S&P 500 and the Dow finish lower on Friday, it would mark their biggest reversals since April 7, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Stocks were poised to close the week with losses, as investors struggle with the reality of rising cases of COVID-19 cropping up in a number of U.S. states and a sobering outlook of the economic recovery offered by Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Wednesday.
